Brake Controller Installation on 2002 Mitsubishi Montero with 4-pole Trailer Connector
Question:
I am struggling to understand how to connect this car to my camper. I need a 7 way connector at the back of the car, where the 4 flat is currently. In addition I need a brake control inside the car. I purchased a unit, but the wire colors do not match color for color, so am not sure how to hook it up.

If you're wanting to tow a camper that's equipped with electric brakes using your Montero, you would indeed need to install a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller.
You would first need to choose a brake controller. I'd recommend a proportional controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 will send the correct amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer stop at the same rate, leading to safer, more predictable braking.
You'll also need the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit. I'll link you to the install instructions for the kit, as well as to some FAQ articles about brake controllers that I think you'll find helpful.
The kit includes an adapter that would plug into your existing 4 pole, converting it into a 7-way. The adapter would have 4 remaining wires. The white wire is grounded, the blue wire carries the output voltage from the brake controller, the black wire carries 12-volt accessory power from the positive battery terminal if needed and the purple wire is tapped into the reverse light circuit of the vehicle if your trailer has reverse lights. If not needed, that wire can be bundled up out of the way.
I've linked you to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a similar vehicle. There wouldn't be much difference between the procedure shown and that used on your vehicle.
You mention that the wire colors don't match up color for color. If you'd care to reply with a further explanation of what wiring you're trying to connect the brake controller to, I'd be happy to help further.
