Which Tow Bar Wiring Diode Kit is Used to Flat Tow a 2003 Chevy Tracker Behind a Motor Home

Question:

I have ordered part# 38955 to wire my 2003 Chevy Tracker as a towed vehicle, however the turn signals and brake lights are different bulbs. The turn signals are amber and the brake lights are red, can I wire the tail lights and brake lights together using a jumper wire?

The diode kit recommended for your 2003 Chevy Tracker is actually the 6-diode kit # 154-792-118158. Those 2 additional diodes will allow the turn signals and brake lights to be separate on the Tracker when it is being towed.

When using a 4-diode kit such as # 38955 the red brake lights will function as both brake lights and turn signals which is perfectly legal if that is what you are worried about.

Since you already have a 4-diode kit at the very least you will just need 2 more diodes, # RM-792, and the necessary connectors to wire them in.

If the motor home does NOT already have a trailer connector AND it too has amber turn signals separate from the brake lights then you will not need anything else other than the 2 diodes mentioned above and a trailer connector for the RV. I recommend # BX8862 to add a 6-Way on the RV and on the front of the Tracker.

But if it DOES have a trailer connector, no matter if the brake lights and turn signals are separate or combined, you will also need converter # 118158. This is because most all trailer connectors on vehicles operate on a combined system. The converter will separate out the signals allowing you to use 6-diodes and have separate turn signals/brake lights on the vehicle. I have included a couple of links that should help.

It also looks like a fuse has to be pulled to flat tow your Tracker. Consult the vehicle owners manual to confirm. To make this process as easy as flipping a switch you can use fuse bypass # RM76511.
