What Does a 5/16 Measurement on a Staple Indicate

When a staple says its a 5/16, does that refer to the width of the staple or the leg length? Thank you for your help!

The 5/16 measurement should be the leg length from the top of the crown to the bottom of the leg. That equals 8 millimeters. This is a common size in many small staple guns like what you might find at a hobby shop.
