Parts Needed to Convert 4-Pole Connector to 7-Way For Using Brake Controller on 2012 Honda Odyssey
Question:
In regard to part #30717: adapter 4 pole to 7 pole vehicle end trailer connector: my 2012 Honda Odyssey was assembled at Honda with a trailer hitch with a 4 solid flat plug attached to hitch frame. My 2015 Jayco pop up trailer has a 7 pole round. Will the 30717 adapter only pluged in to vehicle and trailer w/o the four additional wires connected to car power all the lights / signals, charge the trailer battery, and engage the trailer breaks. Also, does the ground wire from adapter need to be connected to vehicle for any lights to operate on trailer?

With trailer wiring more wires allow more functions. Each wire on your current 4-pole flat trailer connector carries a lighting function. Stop and turn lights are carried on one wire for each side of the trailer (yellow for left and green for right) and the running lights are carried on the brown wire. The 4th wire, the white one, is ground and this ground connection must be solidly made to the vehicle's metalwork for any function to work properly. So this setup gives you 3 functions: stop, turn and tail lights.
To have additional functions you need to add more circuits (more wires) to the set up. You can use a part like # 30717 but this item alone does NOT add the functions, it just changes the connector format and allows you to add the 12V charging circuit and trailer brake circuit, as well as another auxiliary circuit if desired.
If you intend to install a trailer brake controller like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885 for the electric brakes on your Jayco then you're better off using our all-inclusive install kit # ETBC7. This kit and the controller itself are all you need. The kit includes a 7-way adapter like the # 30717 as well as all connectors, wire and circuit breakers. Installation of the kit is shown in the linked video and article.
