Gooseneck Hitch to Fifth Wheel Trailer Adapter Styles

Question:

Hi, I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500, 5.3, 4x4, extended cab w a gooseneck hitch. I think my truck is rated for 7,800-8,000 towing. I will only be towing a MAX of 5,500-6,000. I have added better air intake, HD shocks and struts, transmision cooler, new tires, ceramic brakes, bosch rotors, and some Supersprings for the leafs. My question is - should I convert the hitch in my truck to a fifth wheel or convert the trailer king pin to a gooseneck. What would give me a better and safer ride. Thanks

For the best and safest ride, you will want to use a fifth wheel hitch with your fifth wheel trailer. However, in order to install a fifth wheel hitch in your truck, you would remove your gooseneck hitch. In that situation, you would then be left with a hole in your truck bed where your hitch ball used to be. If this is not the route you want to go, then the next best option is to get an adapter.

The best style adapter to use to haul a fifth wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch is a replacement pin box, such as the Reese Goose Box Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP85FR. This would replace the current pin box on your trailer. However, these adapters fit only certain make and model pin boxes. These adapters also tend to be the most costly.

The next best style adapter would be a fifth wheel hitch that is mounted inside the gooseneck hitch receiver. These adapters vary depending on the manufacturer of your gooseneck hitch. B and W makes the Companion Gooseneck to Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3500 that fits with B and W Turnoverball gooseneck hitchs.

Still a good option, but not the best, would be a king pin adapter, such as the one you reference by Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G. This style of adapter will give you a rougher ride than other adapters.

If you would like the Goose Box, I will be happy to recommend one if you will send me the manufacturer and model number on your current pin box.

If you want to install a fifth wheel hitch, I would use the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit # RP50064-58. Let me know the size of your truck bed and I can make specific recommendations. For example, if a short bed, I recommend the Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel Hitch with Slider # DM8550034.

I have attached an article on towing fifth wheel trailers with a gooseneck hitch for you as well.
