Hitch and Platform Bike Rack Recommendations for 2015 VW Golf SEL

Question:

I have a 2015 Golf SEL 5-dr. I dont think I have a hitch right now deep knowledge of my car, right! only got it in March, why would I have looked down there yet?, and I dont know how expensive they are to install, but obviously thats a problem I will need to solve locally Santa Monica CA.But from my research I think a platform style carrier 2 bikes would be best. It seems more secure, more protective and much less hassle than a rack, and particularly since it looks as though there would be greater visibility out the rear. Is that accurate?. Also it would be great if there is a way to lock the bikes to a locked hitch. There is no humidity here and we have a terrible drought and its usually pretty temperate 50-90 degrees, usually more like 75/55 so weather extremes are not an issue. But I am buying this now because were going to take a road trip to SE Utah in August. I really dont want to spend more than $175, especially since I dont know how expensive it will be to add a hitch! Guess Ill investigate that this weekend. Q: is there a size hitch that you feel would be the most universally suitable, or do I have to pick the rack first? Q: I liked the look of the MaxxHaul Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, I LOVE that it folded down wld that work for me? Should also note that I have some knee issues, so my weightlifting capability is not up to par. But usually my 16-year son is around and will be for the trip anyway. Given all my preferences, what would you recommend? Or is it hopeless? Thanks so much for your guidance.

It's certainly not hopeless, we can get you though this!

Let's begin with the hitch. Trailer hitches are classified according to their capacity. The smaller the vehicle, the lighter the capacity. Because your Golf is a compact car, it uses a Class I hitch which has the lowest capacity. For a hitch, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11412.

Any trusted mechanic would be able to complete the installation for you. I've linked you to the install instructions, so you can print them out and show them to the mechanic so you can get a more accurate installation price quote.

You're correct, platform racks generally hold the bikes more securely. They're also usually easier to load. Given the low height of your rear bumper, the fact that many platform racks offer an angled shank that raises the bikes up a bit higher for additional ground clearance is also very important. I wouldn't give any one category of bike rack an advantage as far as rearward visibility goes.

When it comes to choosing a bike rack, you'll honestly get what you pay for. The Swagman XC, part # S64650, would be a fine choice for the casual rider. You will also need the stabilizer strap # 18050 to go with the bike rack, this strap is required by Curt.
