Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig CG-9 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull it and secure to the red hook attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

Drive forward so that the chains can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Makes all the difference. Pain to put on for the first few times.

Easily gets me up my nightmare driveway. Nice carrying case.

I swore off tire chains over 10y ago due to the hassle of installation, usually in blizzard conditions at night on the side of the road. Alas, the State of California sees fit to require them on mountain passes. So I find these and etrailer helps me out with fitment and other questions.

The chains are, as advertised, are fairly easy to install (way easier than the cheapies at the local auto parts store). The self-tensioning system seemed to work but I may give a tug on them just to make sure they are taut as possible as I did get a fair bit of scuffing on my aluminum rims (from the parts that are plastic covered/coated to prevent scratching vibrating slightly against the rim). I think if the chain self-tensioned a bit tighter this may not have happened.

Overall, a good product, seemed to work in a couple inches of snow, but not in 2 feet (duh) of white stuff! Vibration wasn't too bad on the dry patches of asphalt and the chains generally seemed to hold up well from the limited use I've given them. I would recommend them, just make sure they are taut enough to not tap against your rim.

2019 Honda Accord

We made sure to practice installing these when they first arrived....highly recommended because roadside installation can be stressful. Installation was pretty simple. They survived one part of a trip through snowy mountain conditions. The following morning, about one minute after talking about how great the chains worked....one broke. The connector on the back side of the tire broke off the chain rendering the entire chain useless. A five year warranty was more like a 24 hour warranty. Luckily, we were close to an auto parts store to get replacement chains that were actually easier to install. I had cleared all ice from the wheel well before trying to drive off so I have to think this was a defective chain. I'm just glad it got us to our destination before completely failing. Maybe we were just unlucky but I think this is a serious quality concern.

Excellent Ccustomer
Service - Top shelf products. And we love their How-To videos!
Nice job, guys!

by:

Looks great, good packaging and just what I was hoping for. And got them within 1 week of order.

by:

The chains work well and have saved me several times. To me they are worth the money.

They are a little tricky to put on the first time, and the instructions leave a lot to be desired- in their attempt to be global, there are no written instructions, only pictures which can be hard to interpret especially outside in on a cold night. I recommend watching a youtube video (I found several) and trying it before you get stuck. Once the chains are on, they work great. I got up a winding mountain road with no problem.

One other thing Thule should do is wrap each chain in its own plastic bag within the case. When I took them out for the first time they were a tangled mess.

Cons - Instructions, Tangled packaging.
Pros- They worked, they saved my behind, they didn't do any damange to the tire or car.

2014 Toyota Camry

Two days from time of order to arrival. I ordered this set of chains for my wife's car, which will only be used for emergency-situation driving when we get a heavy snow in north Georgia. Sans emergency we stay home. The chain set is as advertised, and appears to be high quality. I watched the installation video at the time of selecting the product 2 days before arrival. Right after arrival I installed one of the chains from memory without any problems. Installation was very fast, ~ 2 minutes, for the first time.

I have one minor reservation: The tensioning system has two plastic components, a bungie cord attached to a large PLASTIC hook, and this hook attaches to a mating PLASTIC ratcheting cable that connects to the tensioning chain. I realize these chains have a 5-year warranty, but said warranty does no good if the tensioning system fails during emergency driving.

by:

Sorry this is not a product review, as we haven't had snow since I got the chains. But it is comforting to know they are in my trunk. I did want to say that I had excellent experience with etrailer. The communication and support was stellar, and the product arrived very well packed on the day that was quoted.

by:

Thule products are top of the line and these chains did not disappoint! Quick and easy and I feel SAFE when using them!

Thank you etrailer for the great product. Just what we needed for our trip through the mountains in the winter.

by:

Easy install good fit and quality. Easier to put on than take off the way I did it. Suggest adding a best way to take off on your video. The video is a great help to poor Koenig instructions. The added buttons work well. All I need is snow.

Product arrived quickly and as advertis ed
