To wire your 2001 Jeep Cherokee for trailer lights, all you will need is the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118354. This harness has what is called a T-one connector. This harness plugs in line with your vehicles taillights and provides a 4-flat trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle.
You will not have to do any splicing of wires at all. The connection point for the harness can be found behind the trim panel that is behind the spare tire on the drivers side of the vehicle. The 4-pole trailer connector will be stowed inside the cargo area when not in use.
I have included an installation video below showing this harness being installed on a similar vehicle. I have also included a link to the installation details.
