Can a Rackem Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist Mount on a Fender Instead of Trailer Rails

Question:

My trailer is a dual wheel. Can a lift system be mounted on just the fender or would I have to install a rail only between the fender and the gate? Also it is a 18 ft. 12,000 lb. trailer with split gates. Would one lift work with the gates locked together or would it be recommended to go with two lifts? thanks.

The Rack'em Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist # RA-27C you referenced has to be installed on a side rail. It will work on trailer side rails that are 10 to 15 inches tall, and the tailgate has to be at least 44 inches tall in the upright position. When installing on your trailer, ensure the tailgate assist is a close as possible to the end of the rails (as close to the ramp as possible) without interfering with the latches or pins that secure the ramp in the upright position.

It will also depend on the weight of your gate whether you need 1 or 2 tailgate assists. Whether your gate is locked or not, you will need to determine the weight of the gate. For example, a 134 pound gate will be reduced to less than 5 pounds using a tailgate assist. My contact at Rack'em stated if you happen to have a skid steer trailer, or a tailgate weighing more than 200 pounds, he recommends 2 tailgate assists.

I included a short video for you as well.
