Will 4 to 7-Way Adapter # 30717 Plug In Directly On a 2001 Ford F-150

Question:

I unplugged the wiring from a 2005 Excursion which has both a 4 pin and 7 pin socket and controlled my electric brakes. This was standard equipment, including the metal bracket that was bolted to the bumper. Will this part fit or plug directly in the wiring harness on my 2001 F-150?

Part # 30717 is meant to adapt a 4-Way plug to a 7-Way plug. In order to use the adapter, you would need to have a basic 4-Way plug like part # 118344, and the adapter would plug into the 4-Way connector. You would then connect the additional wires on the adapter to power the rest of the prongs on the 7-Way plug.

If you are wanting to move your current 7-Way connector from the 2005 Excursion to the 2001 F-150, I cannot guarantee that it would be a direct fit.

We do, however, offer a custom fit 7-Way wiring harness for your F-150 if the truck came equipped with a 4-Way plug from the factory. Part # 118242 would plug into your existing factory connectors to replace the factory 4-Way.

If your truck did not come equipped with any plug from the factory, you would first need to install 4-Way plug # 118344. Then, you would use the # 30717 adapter to convert to a 7-Way plug. As I mentioned before, you would plug the adapter into the # 118344 4-Way plug, and connect the additional wires from the connector as follows.

White: Ground wire, connected to a suitable grounding point on the vehicle frame.
Blue: Electric brake wire, connected to the electric brake wire coming from the back side of an electric brake controller.
Black: 12v power wire, connected to the vehicle positive battery terminal with a 40amp circuit breaker, part # 9510 if needed.
Yellow: Reverse light wire, connected to the vehicle reverse light wire behind the tail light assembly, if needed to power reverse lights on the trailer. This wire can also be used to power a reverse lockout function, or as an auxiliary 12v power source. It could also be tied up if not needed.

You will also need to install a brake controller in your 2001 F-150 if you are going to be towing a trailer with electric brakes. It sounds like you already have a brake controller installed in your 2005 Excursion. If you could provide the brake controller model and manufacturer I would be glad to see if we offer any plug in brake control wiring adapter or brake controller accessories for your F-150. This way you would be able to simply move the brake controller between the two vehicles.

I have included some links to the installation instructions for the plug in wiring applications, as well as some information pages that should be helpful for you.
