Brake Controller Installation in 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon with Factory Tow Package
Question:
I have a 2015 Outback with the factory tow package. Id like to add a brake controller but dont know exactly which parts I need to connect it. I also need the tow ball that will fit the factory package going to be towing a cargo trailer with go kart in it - could probably get away without trailer brakes, but Id rather be safe than sorry. Im a little intimidated by installing something like this, but if you have guides/videos that show me how to do it on my vehicle, Ill give it a shot. Thanks!

Brake controller installation in your 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon with factory tow package will be a straightforward process and we offer plenty of resources to help you through the install steps.
Since your Outback wagon has the factory tow package it should have a 4-pole flat trailer connector at the rear bumper. Please see the linked photo for illustration. If you have a 4-pole on the car now all you need to add is a brake controller install kit # ETBC7 and the controller of your choice.
The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 controller # 90885 is among the easiest to set up and operate and is highly rated by our customers for its reliability. It includes many helpful features not found on entry-level controllers, including the flexibility to work with both electric and electric-over-hydraulic brakes, built-in diagnostics and flexible mounting options. I have linked both an article and an install video showing the ETBC7 installed in an Outback Wagon. Your installation will be virtually identical.
Your car could be equipped with either of two sizes of hitch, either a 1-1/4-inch Class II or a 2-inch Class III hitch. If you need a ball mount you can use the linked article to help you measure for the correct amount of rise or drop you need to tow the trailer level. You'll want to choose a ball mount with the right rise or drop so that your hitched trailer frame is level with the ground. This is important for best handling.
For example, if you need a Class II ball mount with 4 to 5 inches of drop you can use # 36078 from Draw-Tite. I have included a link to our main page for ball mounts and you can easily sort the results by using the filters on the page. Choose the hitch size and then the rise or drop you require.
You'll also need a hitch ball of the sized required to match your trailer coupler. For a 2-inch ball use # 19258 or for a 1-7/8-inch size use # 19254.
Finally, I have included a link to an article with helpful advice on towing basics.
