Wiring a Brake Controller and 7-Way on a 2007 Toyota Tundra without a Factory Tow Package

Question:

My Tundra dont have factory tow package. I bought a brake controller and harness and a 7 way trailer connector. I need to get the harness for the trailer brakes or tell me how to wire it up for my trailer brake controller to work the trailer brakes. Thanks

Alright, if your brake controller wiring has blue, black, red, and white wires, follow this procedure to install it. You will need Universal Brake Control Wiring Kit for 2-8 Brakes, # 5506.

Start by installing the 7-Way you bought. You will need the 4-Way connection on the vehicle for this. Clip off the existing 4-pole on the vehicle. You will need to test each wire for function using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. First, find the wire that has a constant signal when the lights are on. Attach this wire to the brown wire on the 7-Way.

Next, find the wire that has a signal in unison when the right turn signal is engaged. Connect this wire to the green wire on the 7-Way. Do the same with the left turn signal and attach that wire to the yellow wire on the 7-Way. Finally, attach the last wire on the vehicle to the white wire on the 7-Way.

The purple wire on the 7-Way is for reverse lights. If you need them for your trailer, you will attach the purple wire to one of the reverse light wires behind the taillight. If you do not need it, you can just tie it up out of the way. Mount the 7-Way at the rear of the vehicle and then move on to step 2.

You will need to mount two circuit breakers near the battery. The 5506 kit comes with a 30 amp breaker, but you will need to add a 40 amp breaker # PK54540. After you mount these breakers near the battery, take a length of 12 gauge wire (long enough to go from the 30 amp breaker to the battery) from the 5506 kit and attach the included 3/8 inch ring terminal. On the other end, attach a 5/16 inch ring terminal. Connect this end to the post on the breaker labeled BATT. Do not attach the other end yet.

Next, you will need to run a length of stranded duplex wire from where you plan to mount the brake controller, through the firewall, and up to the battery. Attach a 3/8 inch ring terminal to the white wire and a #10 to the black wire on the battery end of the duplex wire. Attach the black wire to the empty post of the 30 amp breaker. Attach the white wire to the negative battery post.

Connect the brake controllers black wire to the black wire of the duplex cable and the white wire to the duplex white wire. Next, you will need to find the stoplight wire with a circuit tester. The stoplight wire is above the brake pedal. You will need to find the wire that has a signal only when the brake pedal is pressed. Connect that wire to the red wire on the brake controller.

Next, you will run a length of 12 gauge wire from the brake controller blue wire, under the vehicle (avoiding areas that might pinch or burn the wire) and attach it to the blue wire on the 7-Way.

There is now one wire left on the 7-Way harness. This is the black power wire. You will connect a length of wire to this wire and route it under the vehicle, and up into the engine compartment. You will need to attach this to the auxiliary post of the 40 amp. Then run a length of wire from the reaming post to the positive battery terminal. Attach the the wire from the 30 amp breaker to the positive battery post.

Sit back and take a breath, apart from mounting the brake controller and tying up any loose ends, you are done. I have included a link to the instructions for the 5506 kit below.
