Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness For 2011 Nissan Xterra

Question:

I am interested in buying a vehicle wiring package to be used when pulling trailer. I have a 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro 4X. I noticed that there are 4 pin and 7 pin wiring harnesses that can be used. Is there an easy way to tell if I need a 4 pin or a 7 pin harness? Thanks a lot for your help. Sincerely,

Many times you can tell what kind of connector you need by checking out the trailer. If the trailer has brakes you can bet you will need a 7-way connector on your 2011 Nissan Xterra. You would also need a brake controller if the trailer has brakes.

First, if the trailer does not have brakes on it you will probably only need a 4-way connector for running lights, turn signals, and brake lights. If that is the case I recommend the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # C56225. This simply plugs into the vehicle wiring located along the frame rail and gives you a 4-way connector at the rear of your Xterra. I have attached a link to an installation of this adapter on a 2011 Xterra you can check out.

If you find you need a 7-way connector you will need to install the # C56225, and then use part # ETBC7. This will plug into the 4-way connector and with additional wiring gives you a 4-way connector along with a 7-way connector at the back of your vehicle.

If you are towing a trailer with brakes you will need a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This is one of our most popular because it is easy to install and operate.

I have attached a couple of help articles about brake controllers you can check out.
