How to Install a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller on a 2013 Chevy 3500 HD with a OEM Controller

Question:

2013 Chevy 3500HD Dually After installing the P3, do I have to disable the factory controller - if so, how do I do this? Also, I read that this controller will throw a code to the dash that must be erased by a dealer - will the controller work before they clear the code?

You do not have to disable the factory controller. Only unplugging it is what would cause an error code. The Prodigy P3 # 90195 or any aftermarket brake controller will not cause any error codes on your vehicle. As a result, you don't need to have your local dealer do anything.

The blue wire will be a little different. The blue wire will connect to the blue wire for the output circuit of the brake controller. What you will need to do is get 20 feet of 10 gauge blue wire # 10-1-1 (it's sold by the foot) and take one end of the blue wire and connect to your Tekonsha P3 # 90195. Then route the wire through the firewall, under the truck, avoiding areas that can pinch or burn the wire, all the way back to your 7-way controller on your 2013 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD Dually.

Remove the factory blue wire from the 7-way trailer connector at the 7 o'clock position. Tape it up with electrical tape, and tuck it out of the way. Attach the blue wire from your P3 # 90195 that you routed into the 7 o'clock position.

The wiring is as follows: GM wire to brake control wire function, red/black to black battery power, white to white ground, light blue/white to red brake light signal and orange is the CHMSL (center high mount stop lamp).

There are likely a couple of connections you will need to make under the hood to complete the installation. One is power supply wire to the P3, and the other is the battery charge line to the 7-way connector which is probably already connected but might not be.

I have included a link to a help article that explains how to do this.
