Will Brophy Rising Hitch Adapter Clear Rear Bumper on 2013 Honda Accord
Question:
Hi, I recently purchased and installed the Curt hitch on a 2013 Honda Accord. My Yakima Highlight bike rack scrapes on driveways and I was looking to purchase a hitch riser. Would you be able to tell me if the Brophy hitch adapter HT5R would clear the rear bumper? I also have a 2003 Honda Accord coupe and was looking to purchase a hitch along with the Brophy hitch adapter HT5R. Would you be able to tell me if the Brophy hitch adapter HT5R would clear the rear bumper on this car as well? I understand that using an adapter is not ideal and that it will reduce the capacity of the hitch. BTW, your website was very helpful to me during the hitch install.

On adapter # HT5R it measures 3-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright that supports the 2 inch receiver. For Curt hitch # C11681 for the 2013 Honda Accord it should measure about 2-1/2 inches to clear the rear bumper so the adapter would work.
However, the use of an adapter reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent and it also puts additional stress on the hitch. That would mean instead of 200 pounds the tongue weight capacity will be 100 pounds when using the adapter.
Also, on a Class I hitch you are limited to 2 bikes and on a Curt Class I hitch Curt says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using the hitch for anything other than a trailer per their warranty requirements.
For your 2003 Honda Accord and Draw-Tite hitch # 24787 it will be a tighter fit. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole back to clear the rear bumper is 5 inches. But the bumper tapers in towards the vehicle at the bottom so the adapter should fit. I just can't guarantee it.
