Electric Trailer Brake Controller Port Location on a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500
Question:
i just purchased the truck and it has a voyager 9030 brake controler allready installed in it. at this time i dont have a trailer tester or trailer to hook to the truck. i need to know if the people that had the truck before me installed this unit correctly and am trying to track down the brake control port. i would also like to know if the green led lamp is suposed to be illuminated all the time even without a trailer connected.

The brake controller port on a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with the appropriate tow package is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. It will be taped to another wire bundle and will have the harness, part # 3020-P, connected to it. I have included a link to part 3020-P so you know what it looks like as well as the instructions that describe where to find the brake controller port.
The Tekonsha Voyager 9030, part # 39510, should only light up green when there is a trailer or tester plugged into the 7-Way. If the green light is remaining on when the trailer is not connected to your truck it means that the brake controller is sensing a load on the blue brake output wire. Many times when this occurs, there is green or white corrosion that has formed inside the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. I would check the front and back side connections inside the connector to ensure that the connections are clean and that corrosion has not bridged between two or more circuits.
An easy way to see if there is a problem in the brake controller or on the blue wire past the brake controller is to disconnect the blue wire near the back of the brake controller. If, when the wire is separated, the green light goes out you know there is a problem on the blue wire between the controller and the rear of the vehicle. If the green light remains on, there is most likely a problem in the brake controller itself and the controller will need to be replaced. I have added a link to the Voyager instructions manual and to a brake controller wiring page that will help you if you need to wire from scratch.
