Bikes are Unstable on Roof of 2012 GMC Yukon Denali with Factory Roof Rack

Question:

I have a 2012 Yukon Denali and the factory crossbars are really lame. I put two bike racks on top and drove to Moab. Half way there the bikes almost fell of the car. The crossbars flex too much and the vibration caused them to move. The thumb screws that lock the bars position in the slides along the roof are really weak. Are there any options for replacing the factory crossbars with something more substantial?

There are no roof rack options if your 2012 GMC Yukon Denali already has factory crossbars. It is possible that something would fit the side rails that run front to back but none of the manufacturers have tested that.

I think part of the issue could be the bike racks you are using. Some have substantial movement. It could be that is the problem. The roof bike rack that has proven to be the most stable is the Rhino-Rack MountainTrail, # RBC035. I have linked a video showing this rack on a vehicle going through our test course for you.

If you want a rack that does not require removing the front wheel but is still stable I recommend the RockyMounts Brassknuckles, # RKY1201. I have linked a video review of this bike rack as well.
