How to Install a Brake Controller in a 1992 Ford F150 and a 2002 Ford F-350

Question:

Gentlemen: I have a new Tekonsha P3 that will be installed in two vehicles. 1st vehicle is a 2002 Ford F-350 and Tekonsha mfg.s a plug and play pigtail for that application. 2nd vehicle is a 1992 F-150 which Tekonsha does not make a pigtail that will plug into my factory trailer towing wiring connector. However, Curt does make one so I simply have to splice and solder some wires together. However, the Tekonsha color code does not quite match up on all terminals from Ford. so I need to verify the schematic to insure my wiring is as neat as possible and which wires to relocate within the connector. As I understand it - please verify that the following Tekonsha wiring is correct. White - Ground this seems to be obvious Blue - trailer brakes another obvious one Red - Brake light switch Black - power

Actually the Curt wiring harness that you are referring to, part # C51515 is just a harness that gives the connector 4 blunt cut wires for to use for splicing into a vehicle. The Tekonsha controllers actually include those connectors with their controllers. You should have one in the box that came with your P3 # 90195.

To install the controller in your 1992 Ford F-150 you will need to hardwire the controller in. If you do not have a factory trailer wiring you will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118316.

From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well.

Brake controller wiring is as follows. Blue is brake output, black is 12 volt power, white is ground and red is stoplight circuit.

For the 2002 F350 all you would need is the # 3035-P harness. Check out the install video I attached for this harness to the right.
