Troubleshooting Flashing 0.0 Error Message on Curt Discovery Brake Controller # C84VV

Question:

Installed the Curt C84VV in my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 using the Curt 51333 quick plug harness. Plugged everything in and no error codes were displayed. Plugged in a trailer and all lights worked but when I pushed the brake to adjust the output the controller displayed a flashing 00. If I pushed on the brake pedal and adjusted the output all the way left or right to 0 or 10 the display quite flashing but the trailer brakes didnt work. the flashing 00 only displays when a trailer is connected and the brake pedal is pushed - what does this mean?

The troubleshooting guide included in the instructions for the Curt Discovery Brake Controller # C84VV that you referenced does not include this particular display issue, a flashing 0.0, among the possible display messages.

My technical contact at Curt has never seen this particular message displayed on a Discovery brake controller. He suggested that either the display is malfunctioning or the controller is bad. Since your brakes are not engaging when you press the pedal with the trailer connected it could be that the unit is damaged. Do please note that this controller can be used ONLY with electric trailer brakes, not with an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) actuator. The correct harness for your truck is # C51332.

You can try checking your controller installation and trailer wiring for any signs of damaged wires, shorts or anything wired incorrectly. The linked article on troubleshooting may help.

I could not find a purchase record for you so I do not know how old the unit is or where you purchased it. But since it is covered by a limited lifetime warranty from Curt I suggest you contact them or the place of purchase with your concern if you cannot correct the issue using the guidance in the article.

As to the flashing 0.0 display, I have the exact same problem on my 2011 Ford F150 (But used, don’t know the age of the controller). I will work with the comments above, and I have ordered another unit to test with. Will let you know.
