Can Brophy D-Ring Tie Downs # SR15-C be Welded Rather Than Bolted on as Intended

Question:

Hi, I own a 96 Ford F250 with a ladder rack. The rack is mounted to 2inch X 3inch angle iron. I want anchors welded bracket sits vertical to the 2inch side which sits on the inside of the truck bed. Can the bracket be cut to fit, from 3 1/2inch to 2, then welded. The weld style brackets are much too large overkill. Thanks

Expert Reply:

The Brophy D-Ring Tie Downs # SR15-C that you referenced is intended for bolt-on installation. Its 5000-lb capacity rating is based on this intended installation method. However, you certainly could cut down their length from 3-1/2 to 2-inches and weld them into place but you will need to be careful to do the welding in a well-ventilated area since zinc-plated material can give off fumes that could be harmful to breathe.

Also be aware that the finish of the welded parts will be discolored from the welding process and that in this non-standard installation the final capacity of the D-ring will be unknown and could be reduced from its 5K rating.
