An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty

The Timbren rear suspension enhancement system helped with the truck swaying side to side when the slide in camper is on the truck.
The photos show right and left rear with Timbren’s installed (2 photos), with slide in camper on the truck (2 photos) and when the camper was removed (2photos).

Pretty unhappy on this one. Placed the order on the 14th with a 17th delivery date. A confirmation email comes back that it's been shipped but delivery will be on the 20th. I have to delay my trip waiting for this to arrive—last piece of the puzzle. And I get an empty box. I was thinking of canceling when I got the confirmation, should have gone with my initial response. I called and was told a replacement isn't available until mid-March. That's not acceptable. Canceled to order and now have to order elsewhere,

I installed the timbrens on a F350 dually with a slide in camper. The ride was extremely rough couldn't keep the cabinet doors in the camper shut, i think they are a good product but just way to stiff a ride for our liking replace dwith airbags and compressor.

I contacted the manufacturer about this and they believe it is odd and it sounds like the gap between their product and the axle may have the wrong gap. If you would like to look into it further, I will email you information on how to contact Timbren.

by:

It fit perfect, I had to get a special order due to a small lift on my truck suspension but there help at timbren got me the special order number and allowed me to order through etrailer properly, where several other companies couldn't seem to get the job done because of the special order item number, so" hats off to the sales associate at etrailer". It definitely keeps my truck bed from squatting with my UTV up top and my trailer on, and very little sway on corners. Seems to ride the same with no load at all. I don't know if airbags would have been better, but for me this did what I wanted with much less work and expense. I have a F-350 S.B. (single wheel) carrying a 1100 lb. UTV atop my diamondback cover pulling a 22' trailer with 350 tongue weight.

by:

5 stars. Easy to install and made a big difference when pulling a 9k pound travel trailer. I would recommend it to anyone pulling a trailer. Kept it from sagging and level.

The Timbren Suspension system did keep my pickup level when towing my 5th wheel trailer.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

I was on the fence about air bags or the bump stops for my slide in camper on my f350 after lots of reviews I decided to go with the bump stops and couldn’t be happier my truck handles awesome going down the road.

by:

Great product! I've used Timbres suspension enhancement products on another vehicle and they work great. No airbags to worry about and super easy to install. Etrailer is always a pleasure to work with and gets things shipped quickly.

2003 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

All products were great.

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

by:

First off the product was beat up with paint/power coating missing in several places on both. I was putting on a brand new truck with less than 800 miles on it so I elected to touch up before install. I’ve hear a lot about Timbren but never had them. I had airbags on my F350 but when I switched to a new Tundra I went with Timbrens. I’m a bit disappointed in the ride. Feels like I can feel a “bump” in the truck from the rubber pick hitting the axle when I go on a bumpy road. Thinking I should have went with airbags. As far as having a load on the truck and helping with the squat, they do as they are advertised.

by:

They do exactly what I wanted them to do. They support my boat trailer and when not towing, they don’t touch the bumpers everything’s great.

  • Best Suspension Enhancement Recommendatio for 2004 Ford F-350 Dually with Camper Shell
The best suspension enhancement kit for your 2004 Ford F-350 dually for your application is the RoadActive Suspension kit part # RAS3611-HD as it gives you the support you are wanting, is easy to install, and unlike other options (including two you mentioned) that hurt the ride quality this actually improves the ride quality and stability.

  • Does Spacer Come with Timbren Suspension Kit for 2003 Ford F-250
Yes, the spacer is included with the Timbren kit part # TRF250SDE and this is a confirmed fit for your 2003 Ford F-250. We have an 8k kit too with the part # TFRTT350E but there isn't a way to upgrade one from the other though. I would go with the lighter duty kit since the ride quality won't be as harsh.

  • Would the Timbren System for a 1999 Ford F-350 Affect the Ride Height
The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFRTT350E that you referenced will not affect your unloaded ride height at all on your 1999 Ford F350HD. These do not begin helping support your factory suspension until the suspension has been compressed somewhat, so basically your vehicle will feel and look unaffected when not loaded. I attached an FAQ article on Timbren systems for you to check out also.

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendations for a Fleet of 2002 Ford F-350 Ambulances
Air springs are a good solution if the load in the back is frequently changing side to side. When it remains static a better solution would be to go with a non-air system. The load in the back of an ambulance can change depending on the personnel inside, the equipment, and the patient. But there is also not as much room to move the variables around in the back. Either type of system would work for you. For your ambulances, and for an air system, I recommend the Firestone system, # F2550....

For your 2000 Ford F-250 towing a 5th wheel trailer I recommend the Timbren helper springs but the ones you will need are # TFR150SDE because the other ones you mentioned are for Severe Service vehicles only. Since you need support from towing a 5th wheel trailer the Timbrens are a better option than air bags. This is because the load weight and position will basically be exactly the same every time which is what Timbrens are good for. Air bags are better if you carry uneven load frequently...

There is a big difference between the two Timbren kits that fit your 2003 Ford F-250, as the # TFR250SDE is for applications like towing a 5th wheel trailer or travel trailer, and the # TFRTT350E is for service trucks or work trucks. They are not the same with stiffer rubber, the difference is the # TFRTT350E is single-convoluted so it does not have almost any "give" to it.
