Today were going to review the Surco Safari Rack 5.0, roof-top cargo basket, part number SPS 4550-1101. With this kit youll find the base basket that measures 50 inches long by 45 inches wide, outside dimension. And it also comes with the factory rail clamp kit. This kit is designed to clamp to the raised factory side rails on your vehicle and will not use the cross bars, if theyre there. Its an all aluminum construction, so its lightweight while it still maintains its strength, and its built here in the USA. There are plenty of optional accessories that are available for this basket, items like a spare tire carrier, high lift jack, mounts for off-road lights.
The load capacity of the carrier is only limited by the roof capacity of your vehicle. Once youve found the weight capacity of your vehicles roof, all you have to do is add up the weight of your gear and the basket and make sure its within that capacity. Finally, Surco covers this basket with a 90-day warranty. We already have our basket assembled according to the instructions, so now were ready to fit it to our vehicle. First, well set the basket up on top of our vehicles factory raised side rails. Well slide the clamps in their track and make sure that we get the basket positioned properly, and so that its centered from left to right.
Once we have the position of the basket and the spacing on the clamps set, well go ahead and lift at each corner so that we can access the screw within the clamp. Well tighten it down and this will set our clamps position in the track and will also help set the jaws where we want them. Once we have all four corners set, then we can come back and use the included key tool to tighten down the bolts at each of the clamps from the outside. This is whats going to lock down the clamps to our factory raised side rails and secure our basket. With all four corners secured, were ready to load up our basket and take it out for a drive. Really expensive and not easy to mount to roof rails. Once positioned, have to lift each corner of basket and then use Allen wrench upside down to tighten each clamp into place. Probably easier with two people but difficult task doing it alone. I suppose you could it mock it into position, use masking tape or painters tape to mark position of clamps, remove rack from roof, tighten clamps into place then move rack back on to roof. Another option, not simple, easier with 2 people.
Despite the expense and difficult install, once it is installed, removing and replacing the rack is easy and secure using the supplied wrench and the unique bolt shape will make it difficult to steal without the supplied wrench/tool.
The best part about these clamps is that they look fantastic. You can mount this rack using U-bolts and save yourself $160, but the rack won’t be secure against theft and won’t have such a clean, professional look. I took 1 star off because of the cost and difficult install, but I would still buy them again because the looks and security outweigh the cost and difficult install

They look nice and provide a nice option to mount the basket to your roof rack, but, at least mine, are constantly coming loose - especially off road.
