Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Great little brake controller for the money if you don't need heavy braking on a larger trailer. Simple and economic.

by: jim a06/09/2015

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

2010 DodgeRam Pickup

Purchased the Tekonsa Primus IQ controller with wiring adapter for my Dodge Ram. Shipment arrived quickly and was exactly what I needed. Installation was a piece of cake. Cut an opening in the plastic stock dash location. Plugged the adapter into the Dodge plug under the dash and into the Primus. Worked perfectly. No fuss. Installed in about 10 minutes which included the time to cut the opening.. Picture will be poster...
I was so happy with the service from etrailers that I ordered the Blue Ox Swaypro hitch. Thanks ETrailer.com!

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Mike06/26/2013

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

by: Cheapskate07/16/2020

Bought a Tekonsha P3 Trailer brake controller for my RAM 3500 HD when the OEM unit failed. A bit of work is needed to mount it but was well worth the price and effort to install. Simple to set up and adjust as the new brakes wore in. Braking with my 9750 pounds 5th wheel is now superb. The picture shows the final assembly just before popping the unit into the spot where the original unit was installed. My advice is: forget the factory unit, just buy one of these and enjoy your towing experience.

by: Josh B.03/30/2024

I'm sure the product is great, but it does not work with my truck at all. Everything connects, all fuses are good but it receives no power. I had better luck with a cheap one from Amazon prior to this expensive one.

by: Steven K.06/05/2018

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by: Ken L03/05/2015

Everything arrived on time and as advertised. Installation went without a hitch. The imbedded controller was removed without a problem and the wiring adapter worked as advertised. The EVIC does display an error but is easily corrected by depressing the back button before shifting into gear, Another good experience with etrailer!

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by: Rick08/25/2018

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by: David 02/09/2024

I ordered everything to install hitch an and 7 pin plug. Everything went great. Parts were all perfect and instructions easy to follow.

by: Russell 2010 Ram 350002/06/2024

Very easy conversion from factory unit. Slightly trimmed the factory dash where the OEM unit was located. New conversion plug was a perfect match. I highly recommend this unit over the expensive factory replacement

by: Jon W.05/15/2017

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

by: Titus T.03/05/2017

Didn't take long to get once I ordered it. Very easy to install. I used the video to help with the install. Can't wait to start camping. Would definitely use etrailer.com again and will recommend it to friends and family.

  • Installing an Aftermarket Trailer Brake Controller on a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 with Factory Controller
  • To install an aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy, you will have to disconnect the Integrated Trailer Brake Module. Doing so will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific brake control harness. To

  • Location of Brake Controller Connector on 2010 Dodge Ram
  • The brake controller installation on a 2010 Dodge Ram would be pretty much identical to that as the 2009 model shown in the video. The installation port is located under the dash midway between the emergency brake and the brake pedal, just above where your left knee would be as you are sitting behind the wheel. The connector is either white or light blue in color. If you need the wiring adapter that connects the brake controller to the under-dash connector, we offer it. The part # is 3021-P

  • Wiring Harness to Install a Tekonsha Brake Controller on a 2014 Ram 1500
  • For a 2014 Ram 1500 you will need Tekonsha harness # 3023-P. Harness # 3021-P that you referenced fits 2010 to 2012 Rams. In 2013, Dodge created a multiplex electrical system they call the PowerNet. That continued into the 2014 model year. Because of the change, a new harness was needed, # 3023-P. It will still fit the same Tekonsha brake controllers too.

  • 2012 RAM 1500 Brake Controller Recommendation and Install Harness Recommendation
  • All you need to install a brake controller in your 2012 Ram 1500 is the correct harness, part # 3021-P for a Tekonsha brake controller. This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake

  • Will a Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness from a 2010 Ram 1500 Fit a 2013 Ram 1500
  • I have an adapter that will work with a 2013 Ram 1500, but unfortunately Ram switched things up between 2010 and 2013 and the brake controller harnesses are different. Part # 3021-P fits the 2010 models and 2013 requires # 3023-P. I've attached an installation video on a 2013 model for you to check out to see the differences.

  • Bake Controller Recommendation for 2008 GMC W4500
  • The 2008 GMC W4500 would not have a brake controller wiring port as it wasn't initially intended for towing. Since this is a box truck application you'd have to hardwire in a controller after installing a 4-way harness as a base for that. For a 4-way to start you'd need a universal kit part and then convert it to a 7-way with the part # ETBC7.

It will require harness # 3021-P which will plug into a connector located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. I have linked the instructions for this harness for you.

  • Brake Controller Install Harness Recommendation for a 2013 Ram 2500 for Prodigy P3
  • For your 2013 Ram 2500 the correct install harness you would need to install the P3 part # 90195 would be the part # 3023-P which has been confirmed as a fit and not the # 3021-P that you referenced. I attached an install video that shows this harness being used to install a controller in a 2013 Ram just like yours. There is a separate red wire that does end up running to a separate connector.

  • Can the 3021-P Brake Controller Harness be Hardwired to the Factory harness on 2010 Ram
  • So if I understand correctly you need the vehicle side that mates harness # 3021-P is that correct? If so that is something you will have to get from a Ram dealer. Or you will have to cut off the end that plugs into the truck on the 3021-P harness and wire it up to the vehicle side harness by function. The brake controller wiring uses the white wire for ground, black for 12 volt power, red for input from the brake switch, and blue for output to the trailer brakes. Your Ram harness
