Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Great little brake controller for the money if you don't need heavy braking on a larger trailer. Simple and economic.

by: jim a06/09/2015

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

by: Rolando Torres07/11/2013

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Mike06/26/2013

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

by: William03/23/2024

The brake controller worked great once I figured it out to put it on boost 2 after I replace the whole wire to a 10 gauge instead of a 12 but I don't think it was necessary but anyway it's working great

by: John04/26/2024

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by: Roger05/26/2022

The cable arrived and we'll be camping tomorrow knowing the trailer brakes will be working thanks to your quick shipping and nicely constructed cable for my brake controller. It took 5 minutes to install.

I’ve had the Timbren suspension enhancement system for a year now on my ‘99 Dodge 1500 4x4. I purchased this product because I had to tow my bumper pull three horse trailer from South Carolina to N. Central Montana. With a camper top, the bed loaded and the trailer loaded the truck sagged really bad. With the Timbrens on the sag went away completely. Making for a much safer less stressful experience while towing.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help.

After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation.

Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain.

Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector.

5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly.

The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving.

I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery +

Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount.

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by: Tucker C06/15/2016

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch.
When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play.

by: Tim B.05/10/2013

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

by: Larry Mcb.05/22/2022

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

2001 Dodge Durango

Purchased the wiring harness for my 2001 Dodge Durango and installed the brake controller. It was very easy, as my vehicle had a tow package installed already. Only took 20 minutes to hook up. Recommend this harness for similar suv's. Tested out perfectly. The price was better than all local sources. Trailer pic attached.

2003 Ram 2500

If you are struggling with an older trailer brake set up buy the Tekonsha. Just do it. No more delayed braking, buckling or pulsating just a smooth even slow down of the truck and the trailer at the same time. Installed with the wiring adapter on my 2003 Dodge 2500 Diesel. Simple plug and play. Went around the block a couple of times and had this thing dialed in perfectly. Spend an extra $ or 2 and buy this thing. you will be happy you did.

by: Charles04/11/2020

Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Electric brake controller was easy to install on my 2007 Ram 2500 diesel. I purchased the factory connector from e-trailer and snapped right in place. At 1st couldn’t find connector on vehicle but after going on e-trailer FAQ I found it. Picture included. Customer service was outstanding

by: JM07/04/2016

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by: Rick08/25/2018

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by: David 02/09/2024

I ordered everything to install hitch an and 7 pin plug. Everything went great. Parts were all perfect and instructions easy to follow.

by: Jon W.05/15/2017

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

  • Many trailer brake controllers like your Tekonsha PowerTrac # 39523 will actually send short pulses of power back to the brake output pin on the 7-Way even when the vehicle is off. This is essentially the controller's way of checking for a connection with a trailer. These pulses should stop after about 15 minutes of the vehicle being off (at which time the controller will go into a kind of sleep mode). With this in mind it sounds like your PowerTrac is functioning normally. If you notice

  • Locating the OEM Wiring Warness to Plug in a Brake Controller on a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500
  • The port you describe does not seem like what you need. You are going to be looking up under the dash for the 4 pin connector wiring harness. It is usually blue but this is not always the case, it can sometimes be gray. On your 2004 Dodge Ram it will be somewhere under the dash next to the e-brake pedal. The connector will attach to a wiring harness like the Tekonsha Wire Replacement for Dodge Vehicles, item # 3020-P, if your brake controller is a Tekonsha product like the P-3, item

  • How To Determine if 2002 Dodge Ram With Mopar Hitch Has Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter, part # 3020-P, you have referenced is for connecting a Tekonsha brake controller to the brake controller port located in the cab of your vehicle. It will be used if you have the factory 4-Way or the factory 7-Way on the rear of your vehicle. If your Ram did not come with a factory trailer connector the # 3020-P wiring adapter is not needed since there will not be a factory brake controller port under the dash. You would have to hardwire the brake

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500
  • For your 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with the factory 7-Way trailer connector I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885, because its easy to set up and use and it is reliable. This is a proportional controller that will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the Ram is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on the trailer and vehicle brakes. To plug in the controller to your truck you will need wiring harness # 3020-P. I have included a link to a video showing

  • Where Does a Brake Controller Plug Into on a 2003 Dodge Dakota
  • The plug for a brake controller will only be present/functional if your 2003 Dodge Dakota came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector. The factory plug is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Sometimes the connector will be tucked up with other wires, taped up so it isn't easily visible, or it could be behind the driver's side kick panel. For a Tekonsha brake controller such as # 90885 use

  • Will Brake Controller Rated for Two Brake Axles Work on Tandem Axle Trailer
  • Yes, if you only ever plan to tow up to a 2 axle trailer then a brake controller that is rated for up to two brake assemblies would work just fine. The Tekonsha PowerTrac part # 39523 would be a great option for this as it is our best selling controller for up to 2 axles. To install it in your 1997 Dodge Ram would only require the install harness part # 3020-P.

  • Where Does the Power Wire for a Brake Controller Run on a 1995 Dodge Ram
  • The power wire on the Tekonsha Sentinel or any brake controller goes to the vehicle battery via a fuse or circuit breaker. On a 1995 Dodge Ram if you had a factory 4-Way or 7-Way trailer connector then there is a brake controller plug in port that will accept harness # 3020-P. The factory harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. In this set up, the factory harness is already fused and connected

  • Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller and 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2004 Dodge Ram
  • If your 2004 Dodge Ram did not originally come with a factory 7-Way then you will have to hardwire in a brake controller, even though it has a tow button and plug for a controller. To do this you would first need to install a 4-Way (unless the truck already has one) using # C55504. Then you will need the 4- and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7 which provides the 7-Way, retains the 4-Way, and includes the wiring and accessories needed to wire in the brake controller. • Recommended Wiring for Brake Controller On a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500
  • To connect a brake controller to a 7-Way connector on your 1995 Dodge Ram 1500, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller, # ETBC7. This will give you all the circuit breakers, wiring, and the 7-WAY connector. The only thing you will need to do is use butt connectors like # DW05745-10 to splice the 4 way round wiring into the 4 way flat wiring connections as the connector ends will need to be hardwired to each other. For a brake controller, I'd recommend

From the information I was able to obtain there is a brake controller connection point, but the connector is not available aftermarket. If a connector is supplied, it will be in one of two locations. The first is under the dash just to the left of the steering column. The second is behind the driver's side kick panel next to the emergency brake pedal. If you find the connector you will

  • Why is Brake Controller With Low Voltage Not Activating Trailer Brakes
  • Your current brake controller may be bad, but if you are only reading 9.5 volts, it is possible that is the setting the brake controller is on if it has adjustable power settings (I wasn't able to find any info about a Series 5000 specifically). That said, if it is at the max power setting and is only putting out 9.5 volts then the issue is with the controller and it will need to be replaced. A brake controller at its maximum power should be putting out 12 volts, and since the rest of the

  • Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brakes with Prodigy P2 Brake Controller

Since this is a proportional controller it will be difficult to see voltage at the output pin when the brakes are applied since the controller is designed sense inertia and apply the correct voltage based on that. If you have a boost setting applied you will see more voltage there when brakes are applied but you will never see full voltage with just the pedal. Since the breakaway system locks the

  • Brake Controller Needed and Differences Between Electric and Electric/Hydraulic Braking Systems
  • I'd be happy to explain that a bit for you. There are a few different braking systems available for trailers, with electric being the most common. The brake controller sends voltage back to the electromagnets in the brake assemblies, which stick to the inside of the drums, spreading the brake drums apart so they push against the inside of the drums helping to stop the trailer. Some trailers use hydraulic brakes, like cars do. These can be actuated by a surge coupler that compresses
