Most likely your old harness shorted due to a short on the trailer wiring and that is why it got damaged and needed to be replaced. Since you replaced the wiring of your trailer you should be good now.

It's unfortunate but yes, the modules/converter can go bad and they are usually the first thing that does. I know this is frustrating but one of the biggest reasons they fail is they become detached and are left dangling by the wires which causes them to pull off the circuit board. My suspicion is that you have a poor ground connection somewhere on your trailer. The fact that everything works fine until the running lights are turned on is the dead giveaway. For the adapter # 30717 to function, the white wire has to be grounded to the vehicle frame. Without that ground it will not function.
