The remote should not have to be paired each time you hook up to your trailer. It might have the occasional disconnect where it needs to be re-paired, but typically you should not have to pair the remote each time.

There should be no red light on the Voyager brake controller # 39510 when there is no trailer connected. I performed several tests personally and when the connection to the blue wire is not present the light goes out. He stated that while the original reason for the tech bulletin (to prevent erratic display on the controller) has since been resolved, they still highly recommend that the added relays be obtained and installed. There are very specific instructions for installing a brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ part # TK90160 in your 2013 VW Touareg that has the factory 7-way but there isn't an under the dash connector available.

When installing a Tekonsha Prodigy or Tekonsha P-3 Brake Controller, part # 90195, on a 2005 to 2008 Volkswagen Touareg, a relay is needed to prevent an erratic display on the brake controller.
Apparently to activate the lamp out bulb on your vehicles dash a test pulse is run through the brake light output wire. This test pulse will cause problems on the brake controller unless a relay is installed inline.

The 7-Way trailer wiring sockets we have available such as the Pollak Metal # PK12703 referenced in your question do indeed feature the standard US pin configuration. The wiring harness, # 118509, for the 2006 Volkswagen Touareg just plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring. You do not have to splice into the vehicle wiring for installation. You will need to connect the harness to the vehicle battery. The battery connect actually powers the trailer lights while the connection to the tail light wiring provides the signals, not the actual power for the lights.

Since you have the # 118509, custom wiring installed on your Touareg, you have two options. You can use the 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, item # 47515, or you can cut the 4-Pole connector off of the harness and splice in a 5-Way connector, item # HM37908.
