There isn't a tool or any specific way to open a locked cargo box with the key stuck in it, so it's the only option. First there could be a couple issues since you are saying your Reese Goose Box # RP85FR is not accepting air. On the end of the valve is a core. This core could be damaged and not allowing air to enter into the system. There are Core Tools # CA88FR which will allow you to remove the core and inspect/replace if it is damaged and not allowing air into the system. However, in order to determine which replacement lead leg you need, you'll need to find the model of the landing gear on your trailer and measure it's outer tube length. It's not complicated at all to use your Kuat 4 Bike Rack with your BMW X5, you're just going to need at least a class III hitch like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C85VV.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you that it's an easy job to put the hitch on, because it is going to require you to do some trimming, loosen/remove the fascia/some underbody panels, and temporarily remove the bumper, which isn't exactly simple - especially if you're not super mechanically inclined.

The tool-free installations of Yakima, Thule, and Kuat all pinch the rack against the receiver tube. With you having a reducer the rack would clamp to the reducer and there'd be nothing to clamp the reducer to the receiver tube of the hitch without installing a hitch pin. Both Thule and Yakima's designs won't allow for a separate hitch pin so you'll need to go with a Kuat rack like the NV 2.0 # NV22B or # NV22G.

Unfortunately I am not sure the dealer you spoke to knows exactly what he was talking about either. I am not aware of any 6-pin or 4-pin European connectors for a trailer. It sounds to me like you may have a 6-Pole Square Trailer Wiring Connector # 37995 which I have seen installed on a lot of motorcycles.
