Can the signal work if mounted between the canister and a tool box?

Yes Jerry, the Bluetooth Control Kit for Pace Edwards Electric Tonneau Covers # PE63QJ should work fine between the canister and a tool box but you can fire it up and test it prior to mounting it.
If you find that the signal isn't as strong, or that it's not responding you can just move it to a place with better signal.
