The only way to be completely sure of which wire you need to connect to is to use a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993. Check to see if the light green wire or the red wire goes hot when you press the brake pedal. You want to use whichever of these two wires goes hot, only when the brake pedal is pressed. You are wanting to tap into the reverse light circuit on your Windstar for the reverse lights on a trailer or for the reverse lock-out on a boat trailer, is that correct?
The circuit feeding the reverse lights on this vehicle is pretty easy to access. Remove the tail light assembly on one side as if you were replacing a burned out bulb (being careful not to break the tab on the outboard side). 12 o'clock position = red power wire from converter to relay
3 o'clock = white ground wire
6 o'clock = red power wire out to vehicle battery

In order to add a 5-Way to your 1996 Ford Windstar you can use the wiring harness that you have referenced, # C55346, and the 4 to 5-Way adapter you mentioned, # 20036.
