Ironically we just had the same issue with an SRX. The problem was that when installing the Air Force One # SM99243, one step was not done and caused the battery to go dead. When installing the unit in the SRX, the brake pedal has to be moved to the forward position closest tot he driver seat. If it is not, when the unit is installed and tries to adjust itself it applies just enough pressure to make the brake lights go on and run the battery down. I'm not sure what process you used to clean and lubricate your # RM-522, but I would soak the arms with degreaser and then move the arms in and out while rinsing them off with water. You can also use the Roadmaster Tow Bar Cleaner # RM-9932. After they are rinsed, dry the arms thoroughly and lubricate them with a dry silicone spray like the # RM-747.

It sounds like the running light circuit of your trailer wiring is shorting out to the other wires of the trailer harness that you installed so that when you have the head lights on the power from the running light circuit is also being applied to the other circuits as well.

The error code you are reading indicates that there is a short circuit somewhere in the brake outupt circut on your trailer. Most likely, there is a pinched wire or at some point the wire insulation has cracked or been worn to the point where the copper wire is contacting the trailer frame or some other metal part. Start at the trailer connector, making sure that it's not corroded or damaged, then work your way back to the brake magnets, examining the wire as you go.
