Any wiring harness can go bad for a variety of reasons whether it is a bad module, crimped or broken wires, or corrosion on the pins.
You can troubleshoot a wiring harness to see if there is a problem by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. First, you want to make surer there is no corrosion in the trailer connector, and clean it is any is found. Then have someone sit in the driver seat and run through the functions while you test the trailer connector pins for function. If any function is not working, you can move up the line to the wires and test those. If you still are not showing signs of current test the wire leading into the converter. If you are showing current on the wires then the converter has gone bad, and the harness will need to be replaced.
If you find that you need to replace your wiring harness I recommend part # C59236.
