If the two connectors look exactly the same then they are not going to fit. They should be mirror opposites of each other. The vehicle side 4-Way, if they are 4-Ways, has 1 exposed pin and 3 covered pins. The trailer side with have 1 covered pin and 3 exposed pins like in the picture I have added.

The connector won't send any power back on the 12-volt accessory circuit (which powers the Echo) until the vehicle is turned on, the transmission is placed in gear and the brake pedal is applied. I'm not sure which brake controller you have but this is typically an overload error. This means there is a short in the trailer brake output circuit. Unplug the trailer and see if the code goes away. If you still have the error check the blue brake output wire on your vehicle for a short. You could also replace it with # 10-1-1.

If the 7-way connector you purchased is not defective, once it is plugged into your functioning 4 way you should have brake/directionals and running lights. The remaining wires on the 7-way are for the brake output feed used for trailers with electric brakes, a 12-volt power feed, and an auxiliary feed that it typically used for reverse lights on the trailer.

It sounds like you have one of two problems. Either the wiring on the 1995 Ford Ranger is not converted as it should be to allow the brake and turn signals to work on the same circuit correctly, or there is a ground issue on the trailer that is showing up when the brakes and turn signals are applied at the same time.

There could be a couple of reasons for the lights dimming when the trailer is hooked up to the 2001 Ford Ranger.

I spoke with my contact at Curt regarding the issue you're having, and outlined all the steps you'd taken to this point, making sure the fuses for that 12-v circuit are in place, pushed the brake pedal and going through the setup process. Sorry to read you are having an issue with the installation of your Demco Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System w/ Wireless Coachlink Monitor, # DM86VR. I contacted the Demco Tech Reps and they have a suggestion, replace the rubber grommet in the vacuum booster.
They stated that if you used the Demco Vacuum Connection Tee Fitting # DM6257, which you did, then about the only thing that could potentially be causing a vacuum leak would be the rubber grommet in the vehicles brake booster.... view full answer...
The best way to evaluate the operation of the factory 4-pole wiring harness on your 2011 Ford Ranger is to use a circuit tester like # PTW2992 but there are also checks you can do without a tester.

The issue is almost certainly with the hitch cover that you are using after you installed with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # C56431. The issue you described sounds like a bad ground but could also be attributed to a faulty converter box or corrosion. I would first check the grounds. The best way to do this would be to remove each of them on both the trailer connectors and the lighting assemblies. I recommend sanding down the surface with some sandpaper and then attaching with new hardware.
