You can use safety cables instead of chains if your trailer is under the weight rating of the cable. The safety cables are made from nylon coated steel. I do not recommend using the Curt 7500 lb rated safety cable part # C80176 because that would be cutting it pretty close with the weight of your trailer.
I recommend Blue Ox Hook Safety cables part # BX88197 that are rated for 10,000 lbs. The higher up you go in weight rating with safety cables the longer the cables get. The Blue Ox cables... view full answer...
There are two sets of safety cables that are required by law for all flat-towing application. There are what is referred to as short and long safety cabes. Short safety cables connect the base plates to the vehicle and long safety cables connect the base plates to the RV's trailer hitch.
The short safety cables included with the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit part # BX3824 can be wrapped around anywhere on the vehicle's frame and base plates crossbar. The location of the short cables are not... view full answer...
The Roadmaster Sterling tow bar Item # RM-576 is compatible with the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit Item # RM-524431-5 however, the safety cables are not. The current safety cables would need to be removed and you would not use the quick disconnect bar. Each arm will pin directly to the removable tabs on the baseplate. For safety cables I recommend RoadMaster 76" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables - 8,000 lbs Item # RM-645-76.
Installing these on the tow bar is simple. Make... view full answer...
Yes, you could use the coiled safety cables # RM-643 in place of safety chains when towing your trailer. Just make sure that the trailer is under the 6,000 pound capacity of the cables. view full answer...
If the included safety cables on your etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Blue Ox Base Plates - RV Mount - 2" Hitch - 6,000lbs Item # e47ZR aren't reaching the attachment points then I recommend using the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables - 6,000lbs Item # RM-643 instead.
You'll want to have enough slack so that the cables don't snap when you're making a turn but you also don't want the cables to drag on the ground. The best part about coiled cables is that the excess will... view full answer...
If you have the room on your base plates connection to securely attach the hook, then there will be no issue with using the Roadmaster # RM-645 Safety Hooks.
I found another option for you. The Roadmaster 64 Inch Double Hook Safety Cables, # RM-646, is the better option for you.
Theses cables have the same features as the # RM-645 cables that you referenced, but this set includes hooks with spring loaded latches on both ends of the safety cable. These cable will make connecting and disconnecting... view full answer...
You can use standard safety cables with the Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar # RM-576, though you would need to get them separately with the RoadMaster 64" Double Hook, Straight Safety Cables # RM-646. Your other option is to use the Roadmaster Falcon # RM-522, which like the Sterling is an all-terrain, non-binding tow bar that is a motorhome mount.

The Roadmaster 22" Safety Cable Extension # RM-650648-22 will fit with the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471000. I went out to our warehouse to verify this and included a couple pictures that show these two products together. The pin on the chain retainer is held in with a clevis pin that is easily removed and will allow you to attach the safety chain easily and there is plenty of room for the chain to move in the retainer. view full answer...
Safety chains/cables shouldn't actually be attached to the tow bar # C19745 at all. The point is to have an alternative point of security in the event that any connection point of the tow bar fails and you have a loose vehicle on the road.
The Curt Tow Bar with Adjustable-Width Arms # C19745 is a very old-school design that was originally used with metal bumpers and people would just wrap the chains around the bumper and loop it up to the tow vehicle. I recommend finding a point on the... view full answer...
There is a way to use the safety cables that come with the Sterling tow bar # RM-576 with Roadmaster EZ5 base plates such as # RM-524431-5 for the 2017 Ford F-150. The Sterling cable anchors must be attached to the frame of the towed vehicle or welded to the receiver portion of the base plate brackets. A professional welder could perform this task for a nominal fee.
The other option is to not use the included cables and instead use separate coiled cables such as # RM-653. view full answer...
You would only be able to use the EZ Hook safety cable anchors # RM-910653 if you were also using the crossbar that comes with Roadmaster tow bars. This bar is not used with MX base plates so you cannot use the EZ Hook safety cable anchors.
You can instead use them with the EZ4 base plates # RM-521448-4 which also fit your 2014 Jeep Wrangler. view full answer...
The 4' of cable that comes with the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140 is actually standard for breakaway cables. If your trailer comes uncoupled then the chains should catch the coupler (which is why you criss-cross the chains).
The only time you want your trailer brakes to lock up like that is if the trailer were to completely disconnect from your vehicle, safety chains and all. The 4' of cable is enough to let you tow normally without the pin being pulled and... view full answer...

The EZ Hook Safety Cables, part # RM-655, are not compatible with the Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit for the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, part # RM-523200-5.
The Base Plate you have does not have a spot for the anchors of the cables to mount to. Instead, use the Single Hook Cables, part # RM-645. I've linked to a video installation of these cables so you can see how they work. view full answer...

There are a handful of different retainer styles out there to match different thicknesses of chains and cables that we have to offer. So the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471000 would be geared towards a 5/16" diameter (or 1/4") chain/cable while the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471001 would be geared towards a slightly larger 3/8" diameter chain/cable.
