You'll be able to remove the Tailgate Assist very easily. The DeeZee Tailgate Assist attaches to the side of the tailgate and the side of the tailgate opening using a ball and socket. You'll be able to simply pull the assist off both mounts by reversing the procedure seen in the video I've linked you to. Take a look at the Hopkins EasyLift # 74211. I have linked a video showing how the EasyLift works. Since you currently have to get your knee involved to close the tailgate the EasyLift will be the best solution for you. It will also help with lowering the tailgate.
