Having the 4-way run out of the back hatch is actually the preferred method although it seems like it wouldn't be. Having the 4-way stored inside the cab of the vehicle keeps it protected from rain and moisture to prevent corrosion and keeps it protected from damage to the wiring or connector by rocks or debris that might be on the highway.

I looked up the 2006 Nissan Murano and the two switches on your brake pedal are for the brake light and the other switch is for the traction control/cruise control. To find the correct wire you will need to use a circuit tester, part # PTW2993, and test the wires. I would start with the switch that has a red wire with a green stripe and test that wire for power only when the brakes are applied.

It sounds to me like the dealer applied some type of undercoating to the vehicle. In this case you could try removing it off of the weld nuts with a putty knife in order to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13577, on your 2013 Nissan Murano.

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75148 which is a fit for a 2005 Nissan Murano is pretty easy to install. It does not require any cutting or drilling and should only take around 40 minutes or so. If you have common hand tools you will be able to do this just fine in your driveway at home. It won't require any sort of lifting device.

To find the correct brake switch wire use a circuit tester like # PTW2979 if needed to test each of the wires you see. You will need the one that shows power only when you apply the brake pedal. That's a bummer to hear that your hitch interfered with the hands free lift gate. When we installed the Draw Tite hitch part # 75952 on a 2019 Nissan Murano we were able to still trigger the lift gate by kicking to either side of the hitch opening. If you haven't tried that yet I would see if that works before buying a new hitch and sensor.

I spoke with my contact at Curt, and apparently Nissan changed the fuse box for the 2014 model Murano. I was told that they are in the process of updating the instructions to reflect the change.

For a wiring harness that requires a direct connection to the battery, like # 118653, for the 2012 Nissan Murano, the harness will not work unless the battery connection is made. The trailer lights get their power from the battery so if not connected the trailer lights will not work.
The harness has not been tested for any other connection and is not rated to connect anywhere but the battery. Connecting it anywhere else, since not tested, would end up voiding the harness warranty.
