An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Purchased this to help with sag on my truck when pulling our travel trailer. Installed easy enough but have not put to use yet. On regular driving they do not engage, so it a smooth ride.

This made all the difference in the world. In October took trailer camping on a 2200 mile round trip and travel was a breeze.

2019 Ford F-150

These are a much better ride quality than the last pair I owned on a 1 ton truck. Unloaded ride quality is not affected by the Timbren as there is a 1.5" gap. When loaded they provide excellent side to side stability with only gaining an inch height at the rear fender over the factory bump stops when loaded. Very level. Thank you etrailer.

After around 10k mi. they still assist when the load demands it. When unloaded the truck drives nearly as smooth as a car.

Excellent product. Easy to install and it’s a great price! It drastically improved my truck from squatting when a trailer is attached.

Nissan Leaf

We bought these because we are buying a truck bed camper. We have a 23 4x4 F150. The fit of the bottom plate on the driver side was a bit too tight between the leaf block and some wiring mounted on the axle. We trimmed the plate a little so it fit better.

I saw some reviews that said the unloaded right was stiff. We haven’t noticed anything like that. We just hauled a load of firewood off a steep mountain road and the load felt really stable with the timbrens.

Happy with these so far!

2016 Ford F-150

The Timbren rubber spring was ordered, delivered and installed in June 2020. It was installed on a 2016 F150 two-wheel drive. The vehicle has stock suspension – no lift kits or leveler kits.

I found that the nuts and bolts were loose in the box. The plastic bag containing them was open at the top. Fortunately, none of the nuts or bolts had fallen out of the hole in the box.

For the install, I jacked the back of the truck up and took the rear tires off. I was able to install most parts from the side. I found this easier than crawling under the truck. The install went smoothly and took about one hour – including time to remove and replace the wheels. Of the three different nuts and bolts used during the install, torque requirements were provided only for one nut. I guess the two bolts are not critical.

The part came with a 1” rubber spacer. The instructions say that the gap between the rubber spring and the contact point should be between ½” and 1 ½”. As installed, the gap was ½ “ - at the bottom of the manufacturer’s guideline. When I drove the truck around, I could feel the rubber spring bottoming out as I drove over normal road bumps and I didn’t like this hard ride.

So I removed the spacer. The gap is now 1 ½ ” – at the top of the manufacturer’s guidelines. But the empty ride is so much better. Of course, the rubber spring when loaded, is less compressed and there is naturally more stress on the leaf springs. This is the situation that the rubber spring was supposed to fix.

It seems that the install would have been better with either a ¼” or ½” spacer. I would think the optimum installation would be a gap measurement near the mid-point of the gap range. The ½” spacer would be close to this point and should have been the spacer supplied but apparently that is not what is specified for Ford trucks. The 1” spacer is basically useless.

Worked well for what I purchased them for while pulling heavy weights. I did not like how the vehicle drove when not towing, to rough riding. I ended up removing from my pickup and selling.

by:

Works ok with the trailer hooked up but not happy with the ride with no weight in truck

This is often a criticism that is given with Timbren springs when the truck is not loaded. I also see that these kit is meant to be used with vehicles that have a slide-in camper, salt spreader, or those with a mounted crane or other aerial device, such as on a tow truck. If this is not what your Ford is then I recommend going with part # TFR1504E which has a capacity of 6000 pounds.

by:
2017 Ford F-150

Went onto 2017 F-150 very easily. I just jacked up the rear bumper a little and to drop the axle a bit, and everything fit well. Took me about 1.5-2 hours to complete.

All good except when I dont have a load the ride is VERY stiff.

Every time I contact Etrailer I'm always happy with the interaction. This time Stacey helped me make sure I had the proper SES for my F150 and helped with the return of the ones that, may have worked but were not quite the best choice. Thanks for your prompt phone response, quick shipping, and service after the sale.

Straight forward and quick installation. Being paired with the Torklift stableloads for a truck camper on an F150. Helped tremendously with the load stability.

2016 Ford F-150

I purchased for my 2016 F150 to help prevent bottoming while towing, when installed they were VERY stiff and didn't feel as described e.g. progressive load absorbing. Felt like a firm bump stop. in one week of not towing one of the absorbers broke, so I took the whole system off and reinstalled my OEM bump stops. Then I sold my truck and got a 3/4 ton. I contacted etrailer for a refund and explained i didn't want a replacement because I don't own the truck. I was asked to send a photo of the broken part. This all took place within 4 day from purchase. Two week after sending photo of broken part I received a replacement. Now I have a kit for a truck I don't own.

I am sorry about your experience with the suspension system. I will have our customer service department review this and reach out to you.

by:

Works great and exactly as advertised. I have a 200 gallon water tank installed in the bed and there is no squat when filled up.

by:

When the truck is loaded with the camper, it's a great truck ride with the Timbren suspension system.
When the truck is solo (no camper), the Timbren's make the truck ride "stiff" over bumps. Not sure how to fix that, so I'll live with it...

Simple installation only took 30min

by:
2015 Ford F-150

Simple install and works very well on my 2015 F150 4x4. The truck feels way more solid while towing and you don't notice the Timbrens while the truck is unloaded unless on a really bumpy road. Overall great product for the price!

by:
2016 Ford F-150

Very happy with these. Easy to install. They're simple and provide good handling and just a little lift with the camper installed. Much better than the Firestone Riderite airsprings which I had to replace (defective design at least for the 2016 F150 truck).

Still very happy with Timbren springs. No signs of any wear and still performing very well.

by:
2020 Ford F-150

GONNA WORK......THANKS

by:

It works well, but I ordered the 7000 lbs version by mistake, so I get the abrupt "stop" when axle meets the timbren while unloaded. They work well enough that I don't need my Curt WDH to move from storage to home. I just use an old equalizer head unit and the sway control if I need to go on the interstate.

by:

Under load they perform well. Timbren personnel were helpful. Received alternative recommended parts.Without a load or compressive weight it is a unbearable bone jarring ride. Could not achieve 1”recommended clearance between axle plate/spring AND maintain center positioning of spring on axle plate (design intent). U bolt was broken by torque specified. Removed product from vehicle. Would not recommend purchasing. Will pursue alternative.

by:
2022 Ford F-150

I have a 2022 F150 crew cab with the heavy duty payload package (2800lb payload). I called Timbren and they advised to only use the 7000lbs springs for my truck camper which puts me at GVWR when loaded.
The ride is brutal. There is almost no suspension compliance. The ride would probably be better if I was using more of the 7k lb capacity, but then I’d be overloaded.
I don’t understand why this product exists. Any F150 to make use of such extreme support would be grossly overloaded. I ended up using a more expensive solution from a different manufacturer.

by:
Ford Five Hundred

Functionally these Timbren Rubber Springs provide additional load capacity and reduce tipping while turning around corners on my F-150 as claimed; however, the set I purchased was overly stiff (I was only hauling 500 additional pounds). Timbren provided a replacement set with lower capacity which helped tremendously; however, it still rides slightly stiff. I wish Timbren or a competitor would provide these rubber springs in different durometers that provide 1000 lb increments to fine tune the suspension - reducing the over stiffness performance.

Gerard G.

6/11/2020

The ride is still too stiff for my preference. I continue to be on the lookout for incremental rubber durometer springs that enable fine tuning suspensions.

by:

Installation was easy. Haven’t had load put on them yet.

by:

These are horrible. Hit a bump in the road, and it is a hard jolt on the back axle. Would not recommend using it for daily driving. Worst money I have spent.

We hear this quite a bit with Timbren suspension systems. They are better for work vehicles or a vehicle that you have loaded more often then not. I would need to know what your tongue weight is in order for me to help you find a system that would work better for your set up.

Easy install!!!! This is the 2nd application of the Timbren System this year on 2 of our pickups! I highly recommend this enhancement especially if you are ashamed to drive your truck when it squats with a minimal load in the bed…

Because the bolt holding the factory bump stop and the bolt provide with the new Timbren # TFRTT1504E Aeon spring is countersunk, you will indeed need a 13mm ratchet with a 6 or so inch extension to remove the existing bump stop and install the new Timbren spring.
