An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Manufacturer Spotlight - Suspension Enhancement

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we've got John with us from Timbren. He's gonna tell us a little bit more about what separates Timbren from the competitors. I appreciate it, I'm glad to be here. Timbren is a suspension specialist. We're based in Whitby, Ontario, so we are a true manufacturer in Canada and we offer a wide range of suspension products from light duty, from commercial all the way up to Overlander, Sprinter applications and trailers.

Now we've talked about a few of the options you guys have and we have plenty of options on our website. Right. We've got the SES kits. We've got the axle-less suspension. Right.

We've got your new coil inserts that just came out recently. But what would you say is your bread-and-butter at Timbren Yeah, no, our SES, suspension enhancement system, is definitely our bread-and-butter. Came out in 2011, won a SEMA New Product Award for best truck suspension. And really, the evolution you just mentioned here, you know, starting in 1968 all the way through now, 2024. But the SES kits are really the core of who we are.

And if you, if you would say at, in the level of stiffness on the market, what would you, would you put yourself in more in a heavy duty side for the SES kits or is it more of a lighter duty Yeah, great question. Lighter duty, we certainly can have a product for commercial and heavy duty, but in '82 when SES was introduced, it was purposely introduced for that, that light duty market. So we start with 1500 and again, go all the way up, but by far really popular with that 1500, 2500 crowd. That kinda leads me into my next question. So we talked about, your specialty is kind of in the lighter duty, but do you have an option for the heavier duty for your sprinter vans and maybe for your truck bed campers Yeah, absolutely.

We do have SES kits for truck beds, truck campers with a higher center of gravity. That creates a new kind of set of problems with the sway side to side. So we have severe duty kits for those. And it uses a single convoluted AON versus a double convoluted to tackle that problem of side to side. And the same thing with the sprinter van. It uses a rectangular shape Aon, but it's there to do the same deal that side to side sway because they're so top heavy, it'll eliminate that. Okay. And then we've had an instance here at etrailer that we had a van that was very, very heavy on the one side. Is there anything that you guys can do personally to help, I would say, I guess customize that kit for that particular user Yeah, by all means we would want that individual to contact us. We would ask a couple questions, see where that weight is distributed and we can actually produce an AON with either a stiffer hardness or durometer or a softer durometer and that will help level it out. So yes, we can take care of that for 'em. And I think that'll really, really help people to get their rigs dialed in because who knows what they're putting in the campers afterwards, after they buy 'em. They come from the manufacturer already heavy on that side and they're trying to load stuff on the other side to try to even it out. But knowing that there's a solution that you can customize for your rig no matter what the weight is on either side is really, really cool. Yeah, absolutely. We're happy to take care of 'em and again, there's no charge for that. Awesome. Now to kind of wrap things up, what sets Timbren apart from a lot of other manufacturers out there Well, I think there's a couple things. We're a family run company and our longevity, you can't deny, 1968 to 2024 and our warranty, we have a lifetime warranty regardless of how old it is. We will take care of it, replace it, limited lifetime warranty, and the hundred day money back guarantee. Very cool. And that's whether or not you're the first owner Right. And yeah, we're not asking for receipt, who'd you buy it from It'll be taken care of. Just give us a ring and we'll take care of it for you. Very cool. Well thank you again for meeting with us. Appreciate it. It was a pleasure to work with you. Thank you.

2005 MazdaMPV Van

It does a good job of dampening the impact of a suspension bottoming out in a fully loaded vehicle. We have owned our 2005 MPV LX sine new and I have 3 children plus a sister-in-law who goes on camping trips with us. Through the years, I noticed that when fully loaded, the van started hitting the bump stops more often and this is felt as a violent thump when going over bumps or dips in the road. This was getting me worried that the springs and shocks were worn out so I had my mechanic replace both of these because on numerous camping trips, this never happened before. It only partially solved the problem. Then it dawned on me- my kids are now all grown up/heavier. I just wasted $2K on new springs/shocks. I tried rubber coil spring spacers and upgraded my Bump stops to sturdier polyurethane units to replace the foam rubber original ones but these did not help at all. I considered the Air spring inserts but was worried about their complexity, durability and difficulty of installation since I wanted a DIY solution. The Timbrens did a good job of softening the impacts such that my rear passengers immediately noticed the improvement. The suspension still bottoms out but the impact is now soft and it does not affect the normal driving dynamics of the vehicle when not fully loaded. Installation was so easy that I made my two teenage sons do each side to teach them a few life skills. I give the product a thumbs up. The only downside is they are very expensive for what they are made of- simple rubber, bolts and washers. To compare, I could buy two new tires for the price of this pair of SES Buffers. Save your money and try these before replacing the rear springs/Shock absorbers.

2002 MazdaMPV Van

i recently added a power lift to my 2002 mazda mpv to carry my husbands new power chair. i needed these to prevent the sagging that occurred when just the class III hitch was installed. we loaded the chair on the lift once and i knew we could not leave the sagging that way. i did not want the maintenance of air shocks, air bags or air springs so i ordered these and am very happy i did. it keeps everything level with the full load on the rear and does not affect the ride when loaded or empty (with just the hitch). i would recommend these if you just put people in the back of any van.
Installation was very simple. jacked up van with floor jack i have with tire 1" off ground. i am not sure if my stock bumpers fell off or were stolen in the past but they were not there. i took off the one bolt (14mm), assembled the timbren ses with supplied long bolt (17mm) and left stock bumper mount on top (same orientation), used a deep socket (17mm) stuffed with a paper towel and short 3/8" extension and started the bolt by hand. then placed the 3/8" ratchet on and tightened it up.
NOTE: I visited the hardware store before I started, with the assembled timbrens in hand. I bought two 7/16" washers and two 7/16" split lock-washers because it looked like the bolts would bottom out on the un-threaded portion before fully tightening them up.
Sure enough, on the passenger side i had to add a 7/16" lock-washer to get it to snug up. There was alot of slack/play after the threads bottomed out on the un-threaded part of the bolt shaft. On the drivers side it did not need a lock-washer added. it tightend up without any play. I will check them periodically to see if they are coming loose. if so, I will place the lock-washer and the other flat washer I bought on both bolts, then assemble the rest and tighten up again with thread locker on the threads.
The install went so fast if I had to take them down to add anything it would only be a few minutes for both sides.
Nice stiff, controlled cornering without the roll. wish I added these years ago to make my minivan with the heart of a sports car even sportier. Thanks e-trailer, Carol S

2004 Mazda MPV rear suspension.
We tow
a small popup with the aforementioned minivan. It would always sag in the rear by a good 5 - 6 inches. The Timbren cut that down to about 3 inches. It also helped with stability towing and carrying heavy loads whilst on the interstate. Unloaded it does make the ride a bit harsher, but it is a very good trade-off.

2000 MazdaMPV Van

Installed on a 2000 Mazda MPV. Some installation comments. The shorter set of bolts specified in the instructions to fit are too short to be inserted into the bump stop assembly with enough bolt left protruding to screw into van frame. Used the longer set of bolts. The threads on the longer bolts reach their limit just as the assembly makes contact with the frame. With the bolts tighten snugly, the assembly can still be turned easily by hand. No significant play vertically. Performance appears to be fine.

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

Took about 45 minutes to install. But that was 2 trips into the house cause my deep drive sockets were buried. F-350 gasser with 8’ box, Fiberglas cap, 200lb wooden storage drawers and estimated 400lbs in tools. I tow a 14k bumper pull dump that squats the truck. I installed the spacer with the timbrens and it sits on the original axle stop. Ride quality is unknown as I haven’t driven it yet.

by:

Installation was a breeze, removed old bump stops installed Timbrens in about 30 minutes. Haven’t put a load on them yet so I’ll update later. Installed on a 2008 Silverado 2500HD..

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

The Timbren SES (Bump Stop) replacement for the 3rd Gen Sequoia is a simple and effetive solution to reduce vehicle sag when trailering heavy loads. You definately want to use the included spacer as the pics will show I still had 2 finger clearance above the axle to allow for OEM suspension travel. I pulled my 29ft boat back to back with / without the Timbren bump stops for a ride quality test. Without the bump stops, my 2024 Sequoia rear end was crushed, resulting in a rough ride and poor handling characteristics. With the Timbern bump stops, the rear sag was reduced signifincantly, and the vehicle drove much better. YES, you will feel and occasional bottom out feeling on abrupt G-out dips... But it is no worse than without the Timberns as the stock springs were crushed. My daily drive feels exactly the same as I have the perfect gap between the Timbren bump stop and the axle allowing the OEM suspension to float over road surface without engaging the bump stops. VERDICT: Time will tell with varied passenger loads, speeds, road surface bumps etc., but my initial impression is 7 out of 10. Ultimately, I would prefer air bags, and may install them along with the Timbrens whih I can swap back to the oem bump stop in less than 15 minutes. NOTE: I was able to install the Timbren bump stops without going under the Sequoia. I simply raised the vehicle frame aprox. 4" withoug picking up the rear tire. This gave me adequate room to reach in over the tire and remove the 3 12MM bolts holding the OEM bump stop in place with a 3/8" ratchet and a 4" extension. Then, I put the Timbren bump stop in place and lightly threaded the upper bolt to hold in place. After installing the two lower bolts and smart torquing, then you tighten the top bolt. This allows the bracket to seat against the frame fully as the top bolt hole is slotted to allow movement druing install. Pics will show spacers installed above the bump stops, Installed bump stops unloaded with 2 finger gap, spacers loaded with 750 lbs of tongue weight, and lastly, will show Sequoia stance while loaded. NOTE: The last picture will show my Sequoia loaded WITHOUT the Timbren SES (Bump Stops) and the vehicle is sagging heavily.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Installation was easy and straightforward. Haven’t towed with them yet, but the unloaded ride has not at all been negatively affected. In fact unless you hit a big bump you shouldn’t know they are there but they seem to improve handling around turns when there is a shift to either side in the back. It a HD truck so there is some expectation it’s gonna ride like a covered wagon at times. I added these in conjunction with new Billstein shocks and I’m hopeful all that aggravating bouncing or porpoising my fifth wheel does on bad roads and bridge transitions will significantly improve. etrailer was fast with shipping and follow up. I’ll update after towing.

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

I installed over the weekend and have a maiden journey with the Travel Trailer coming up next week. Installation on my 2017 Toyota Sequoia was straight forward. I was going to say easy, but I am not as young as before and my wheel / tire combo is damn heavy for an older guy. But that's another story. Anyway, just remember folks, this does not increase the payload of your vehicle. You must still use WDH and sway control for longer/heavier trailers.

by:

Haven’t hauled my 5th wheel yet so will have to update once i have.
Package arrived promptly, installed in my garage in about 40 minutes with absolute minimal swearing. Installation would have been quicker if I hadn’t wasted time figuring out that my brand new Ford F250 has metric nuts. Great fit, great follow up from the company. I’ll be doing more business with them.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

  • Will Timbren Suspension Enhancement System Work On 2001 Mazda MPV LX Minivan
The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, part # TMRMPV should do a great job on your 2001 MPV. This system will not affect the ride of your van when the added weight is not present but will add additional support when the van is loaded. This is a simple installation but it is recommended that the installation be done by a professional. The coil springs on your van will need to be temporarily removed to replace the bump stops with the new Timbren assembly, and then it will be re-installed....

We do have a suspension enhancement system that works for your 2002 Mazda MPV, but Air Lift # AL60759 does not fit. Currently the only suspension enhancement we sell for your application is the Timbren jounce spring # TMRMPV. This jounce spring only works with the 2wd van. The Timbren system is easy to install and is maintenance free. A Timbren jounce spring is a good idea because you don't need to add air before towing and there aren't any leaks to worry about.
