Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Honda Accord - Draw-Tite

Kevin Bross: Today, on our 2012 Honda Accord, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver in the Class 1 with an inch-and-a-quarter opening, Part No. 24899. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch-pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 4 inches. And from the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 12 inches. Now, let's go ahead and install our hitch. To begin with, we're going to go ahead and put a safety strap up to support the exhaust once we remove the rubber isolators that keep the exhaust in place. With our safety strap in place, we'll go ahead and use a little spray lubricant on the rubber isolators, and then we'll use a pry bar or a large flathead screwdriver to remove them from their hangers, one in the center section of the vehicle here and two just around the muffler. Now, we can go ahead and gently lower the exhaust down using the safety strap. With the exhaust lowered down out of the way enough, we can go ahead and take the four bolts out that hold the heat shield in place.

Now, with the heat shield removed, we can go ahead and set that aside for now. Next, we're going to go ahead and remove the mud flap and the three screws to get the underbody panel off. Next, we'll go ahead and remove this underbody panel here by removing a combination of screws in the wheel well, push fasteners, as well as some bolts that will require a 10-millimeter socket to get them out. Then, once we have all the hardware out, we can go ahead and remove this underbody panel, and we'll set it aside for later. Next, we'll need to go ahead and open up our two access holes just a little bit because our spacer blocks do not fit in them. To do this, we're going to use a round file on our drill just to open it up just slightly so that the block slides into place. Our carriage bolt fits just fine at this time, so you'll only need to remove a small amount from one side of the hole to allow the spacer block to fit in. Once we've reamed out the holes on both sides, we'll go ahead and use the fish wire and fish our carriage bolt and spacer block into place. Here's the two locations that we'll be pulling the carriage bolt and spacer block into. Now that we've got our spacer block and carriage bolts into place, now we can go ahead and put the U-bolt over the tow hook that's at the rear of the vehicle in the center.

For the center U-bolt, we'll be using 3/8 conical tooth washers and two 3/8 hex nuts. Now, let's go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us raise the hitch up into place, making sure that when we raise the hitch up, we don't push the carriage bolts back into the frame. Now, for the two carriage bolts that we installed into the frame, the other hardware used at these two locations will be a 7/16 conical tooth washer and a 7/16 hex nut. You want to make sure on all the conical tooth washers that the teeth are facing towards the hitch. Now, we can go ahead and center our hitch on our vehicle. Once we have the hitch centered, we'll go ahead and tighten it down and then torque it to the manufacturer's specifications. Now, before we can put the heat shield back up, we'll need to do some trimming on it so that the heat shield clears the hitch. You can either use a cutoff wheel or a pair of tin snips or any other means of cutting this metal. Once we have the heat shield trimmed out, we can go ahead and reinstall it with the four bolts that we removed earlier. Now that our heat shield's back up into place, we can go ahead and reconnect the three rubber isolators that we removed from the exhaust earlier.

With our exhaust back up into place, we can go ahead and remove the safety strap. Now, the directions show that you can cut the underbody panel to make it fit back up on the hitch. But we found, before we cut it, when we we're going to just test-fit it back up there, that the two rear locations, one on either side of the receiver part of the hitch that require pushpin fasteners, are completely covered by the hitch. So there's no real way that you can put this underbody panel back up on this particular vehicle. Instead, we went ahead and put the mud flap and the three screws in that we had to remove to get the underbody panel off. And, with that, that'll conclude our installation of the Draw-Tite Hitch, Part No. 24899 on our 2012 Honda Accord. .

The trailer hitch receiver fit my 2013 Acura TL very well. I did have to make an extra hole next to where the bolts go to be able to get the bolt and plate in. I did the job by myself and it took me about 3 hours.

Its been great. I use my bike rack every weekend, so the trailer hitch has been a great investment.

There were a few hiccups during installation. We decided to keep the fascia, and therefore had to trim the edges of it, the instructions say to remove it, that was a personal decision to keep it. As described, the heat shield was required to be trimmed as well, and the hole to thread the initial screws on the sides were too small, requiring us to use a dremmel to widen the hole. After that, everything was straight forward and fairly easy. My main intention is to use this with a bike rack. It solved the problem of only having a rear tow hook. It helped to use bungee cords to hold up the mufflers so there wasn't as much stress on the front.

Its great. I love the fact that I can carry my bike without worrying about the trunk of my car being ruined from a tie on type rack. The hitch is also discreet, but sticks out enough to allow clearance without concern for anything smacking you car. Just remember to turn off back up sensors while you have anything attached!

Order arrived intact. Fit was excellent and overall install was fairly smooth.

Things I learned during the install:

1) If you don't do this for a living, allow at least two to three hours start-to-finish. Watch the install video twice.

2) Most of us don't have a lift, so jack up your car to allow plenty of movement underneath while you do the install. I used a bottle jack to support the exhaust and two jackstands to support the hitch during attachment.

3) When you file the hole to allow the metal support to pass through, don't let the support slip inside the frame rail without the wire leader installed in the metal support.

I had fun installing the hitch even though I hit a few snags. The kit supplied by etrailer contained everything I needed to complete the job.

Perfect fit for my 2014 Honda Accord. The installation instructions and videos were very helpful. The install was easy, and took me about 90 minutes.

Since installing, this hitch had worked well for the past year. I especially like how it fits close to the car bumper, yet is still easy to access. I added a 6" rise adapter and it is plenty high for my tray style bike rack. I've taken my bike to many trails since installing this hitch.

Very sleek works perfectly! Simple to install as long as you follow the instructions. The only thing that could be changed is a better illustration on how to cut out the underbody cover.

Multiple times I had to retighten the main bolts and buy some loctite to stop them from loosening up. The U bolt that attaches to the tow hook broke 3 times with the small gauge u bolt provided and two from tractor supply. I finally found a larger gauge at tractor supply and used locknuts to keep it on. No problems since then! I used this trailer pulling landscaping equipment all spring, summer, and fall. Well over 30,000 miles and it only had those few issues. I highly recommend that the manufacture use locknuts and a higher gauge u bolt.

Great product. It took me and my son 5 hours to install. Get a long ratchet to get the screws out of the plastic cover underneath. Heat shield is a bit if a pain but just keep trimming it till it fits. The video says to us a cargo stap to hold the muffler up. We used a car jack. Video said to leave the plastic cover off after installation. I figured the manufacturer put it there for a reason. I used tin snips to trim it up. Plastic pins can't be used again so we used cable ties. Everything fits perfectly.

Not too hard a job. Aside from having road grit fall in my eyes while on my back, the most difficult task was reattaching the rubber muffler mount. Great looking installation, and very fast service. I've used etrailer for 3 hitches and have always been happy with the products and service.

Received product in 5 business days. I am located on the West Coast and paid extra for 3-5 day shipping. Had my father and son install on my 2016 Honda Accord Touring Sedan. Took them 2 1/2hrs. May be quicker for others since it was a learning experience for my son. Had to do small modification to the carriage bolt plates to allow them to fit through the hole in the frame. Small amount of grinding. I am using this with a Yakima bike rack. First trip did great. Very happy with the look on my vehicle, and my purchase. Highly recommend it.

The installation instructions the require the enlargement of the access hole using a wrench or a file. Their preference is to enlarge the access hole on the frame vs. grinding down the spacers.

2017 Honda Accord

Overall great. I really like the design of the Draw Tite where it angles back sharply and makes the hitch less visible. Product is sturdy and well built. eTrailer service experience has been great. Removed a star overall due to the need to file away material under the car in order to get a part to fit when the part could have been made to fit easily without modification. While the need to file was in the instructions, it was not shown in the install videos even though it was my exact make/model of car. Make sure you have a metal file that will work for the task or your install will be inconveniently interrupted. It took minimal effort and time once I figured it out and aside from that the install was fairly easy.

Just recently purchased a hitch for my 2013 honda accord cpe v6 and was very satisfied. Delivery was super fast. Product is top quality. Easy to install. Did it all by myself. Took about a good 1hour from start to finish. Video on the site was very helpful for installation. Will post pictures soon.

Hey Mark. I have a 2013 coupe. I was wondering why you chose this hitch over the Curt hitch. I cant decide between the two but this one looks good on your car.

I purchased the Thule Roadway 2 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting, Thule Bike Adapter Bar, trailer hitch receiver and Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock and Anti-Rattle Device for my 2012 Acura TL to take my mountain bike and my son's bike camping over the summer. I was a little nervous using it for the first time, especially on a 3.5 hour drive every other summer, but the equipment functioned flawlessly! I even received a comment regarding how sturdy the equipment is and that it does not move a lot like other bike racks they have seen. I did have an issue with the stinger, but etrailer resolved my problem with absolutely no issue what-so-ever. I'm very happy with the products I purchased and even more happy with the purchase experience and interaction I had with etrailer and its staff.

Honda Accord

Last year I needed a trailer hitch to fit my Honda Accord to mount a bicycle rack for a bike tour of Newfoundland with my son. My wife convinced me to pay a shop to install one rather than use my precious time. (My wife, by the way, is the voice of reason.) I consented and made arrangements. After two reschedules with the shop and then being notified that they didn't have a hitch to fit my car I found myself four days before our departure with no hitch. I ordered the hitch specified for my car from etrailer and it arrived it two days. It fit my car perfectly with a slight modification described in the instructions and took about two hours to install. There it remains having been put to good use since. These guys did a great Job!

by:

Hitch is working great! I use it mainly for bike rack, cargo tray, and other light-duty accessories. Installation was as expected with no issues. I'm giving the hitch 4 stars because it sticks out beyond the bumper a little more than I was hoping, but so far no shin whacks. etrailer.com gets 5 stars for service and delivery. Everything was great.

by:

Install was successful with video instruction on my 2013 Honda Accord. Difficulty from 1-10, about a 6. Well made product. Use it for our bikes to go anywhere with our Thule hitch rack.
Risk mention: (For Honda or similar 4 door sedan)
On steep driveways. Need to reverse slowly on an angle to avoid scrape from hitch. Other than than that minor adjustment, very happy with product.

Your website was first rate. After viewing the installation video one time. I installed the trailer hitch a week later when it arrived without reading the instructions. The video was exactly how the installation actually was (type car / equipment). The road test of actual type bicycle rack to hitch video gives a great insight to the expected movement during ruff / bumpy drives and it gave me added confidence that was buying capable equipment.

Most of all when I called in my ordered your company rep (was that you?) referred me to the lower price hitch because I was transporting bicycles not towing a trailer as she discerned .....!saved me $[..]!....I like that.

See my attached images.

I just installed this hitch on my 2013 Honda Accord. The kit from etrailer contained all of the needed parts. The hitch fits perfectly, is secure and looks great. Etrailer did a great job of processing my order and George followed up to make sure that I had everything I needed. I installed this hitch so that I could mount my bike rack on my car. The rack was quite tight when I inserted it into the receiver which should help to stabilize the installation but I had to lubricate the parts to install it. I was able to easily remove the rack. Also, the plate above the receiver and the loops below make for a very small area in which to insert a wrench to tighten the rack. I could not use the tool that came with the rack and had to use a deep socket instead. Not a big deal. All in all I am quite satisfied with the hitch and with etrailer.

by:

Customer service reps gave helpful information when I contacted etrailer by phone. Ordered item and received it four days later. The installation went just like online video suggested it would. Instructions included were clear and all parts were present. It took me about an hour because I did not have all the right tools on hand. It has only been used once since installation, but it held new bike rack and two bikes for its maiden voyage on the highway.

Well built . Doesn’t stick out past the bumper . It hauls my two bikes on a bike rack with no problem. I would recommend this trailer hitch been using it for about a year now on my Honda accord.

2017 Honda Accord

Installed on a 2017 Honda Accord. Everything fit perfectly. I followed the instructions and the video provided on etrailer.com. It took me a little longer considering I didn't use a jack and I was underneath a car with relatively low ground clearance, but it all went together as it should. It will serve its purpose of carrying my bikes on road trips. Thanks for the great price and install video etrailer.com!

Purchased for a 2014 Accord Sport. The powder coating flaked off in two places - very small areas. Had some rustolium black to re-paint areas but i'm not 100% sure I didn't damage while installing. Only had two issues that not covered in written instructions and video. I had to enlarge the hole in the frame rail at the attachment point - fortunately had a bit large enough and didn't have to run out to buy one. The 2nd issue was that there is an extra plastic body panel under my spare tire well that interfered with the horizontal bars of the hitch. Used an oscillating multi-tool to cut out areas for clearance (see photos).
Not mentioned in the video - with dual exhaust I felt the mufflers were too heavy to let just hang - so i supported with a jack stand. The only problem with this was having to adjust the jack stand to work on either side of the car.
Overall - fairly easy install - I did it all by myself on ramps - would have given 4-1/2 stars if option available. I was fortunate to have all the additional tools necessary to complete the install - would have been nice to know all that I would need ahead of time.

This drawtight hitch is a perfect fit for my Acura TSX.The installation took just about 1-2 hours with a help of a friend. The only thing that took awhile(about 30 mins) in this installation is the shaving and trimming the hole of the frame where the bolt and plate goes in. After That it was a breeze .what I like about this hitch is how hidden and discreet it looks. Some hitch I see on other cars looks very noticeable from a distance. This one was pretty hidden and it doesn’t look big on a car. The hitch receiver does stick out of the vehicle maybe an inch or inch 1/2 from the rear bumper. I also used a thread locker(blue) loctite from extra protection. Thanks etrailer for the fast shipping!

2015 Honda Accord

It took a little more work than the directions stated but my daughter and I got it on with moderate effort and she loves it we put it on her 2015 Honda Accord so she could use a better bike rack hauler than the one that went on the trunk.

by:

This worked well for my 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid. I did have to make slight modifications to the underside of the car because the hybrid model has extra plastic panels under the trunk area for aerodynamics. The actual instal of this hitch receiver was straightforward and I expect it to be solid and hold the weight it is specified for.

Easy to install i use the second video 2011 Acura that vidoe is a A+++ to follow i take 1:30 hrs to do it with my tools i did take few breaks to hot i will recommend this product to anyone

2009 Honda Accord

Good looking product (for something that goes under your car). Easy install. I had to make the holes just a bit wider on the car frame to fit the plates through the wholes. That took the longest time. Other than that, pretty easy install. Trust me! I have a hard time changing a light bulb and this was relatively pain free. I did it all alone! and it took me about 1 hour. I've been using it to carry my bike rack and so far so good. Have yet to tow anything with it. I will however be towing my motorcycle this weekend. We'll see how it handles then. You can barely see it on a Honda Accord 2009. The people at etrailer were very professional, fast delivery, and are very involve in customer satisfaction. I would definitely buy from them again
