Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.


In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13-inch, hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This set is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Having the two brake assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 8,000 pound capacity AL-KO or quality type axle with the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we've got eight of these 9/16th inch diameter wheel bolts in the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our hubs and rotors, as well as our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets all have an e-coating on 'em that's gonna help resist rust and corrosion. That e-coating has a 250 to 350 hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna be adequate for your campers, car haulers, and utility type trailers really any trailer that's not going to be in very corrosive environments. If you've got a trailer that's going to be going in and out of water, especially salt water or if you're gonna be traveling on really heavily treated roads where there's gonna be a lot of contact with salt, I would recommend going more with a set that has a dichromate finish or a stainless steel construction. Those are gonna hold up a little bit better in those more corrosive environments.

But these are gonna do just fine if your trailer isn't gonna be in those kind of environments frequently. So upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is gonna have several different benefits. These are going to have these ceramic brake pads that are going to help increase your stopping power and so that's going to help dramatically shorten your stopping distance. There's also a large two and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides fast, responsive braking so it is gonna be much smoother and more controlled than you're used to with your drum brakes. So you're not gonna have that pushing and pulling that you're probably used to.

And in addition to better performance these are also going to require less maintenance so it is gonna help save you time and money. Having the one piece hub and rotor assembly does reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. They also have the vented design, as you can see here on the side, that's gonna help dissipate heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. Now these brake pads will wear down over time. You will have to replace them eventually, but it's a pretty straightforward process and really those are the only components that will need to be replaced.

You're not gonna have all the small springs and other components like you do with your drum breaks. So again, it is going to help save you time and money. And these are a high quality automotive grade construction so they are gonna be very long-lasting for you. The one caveat from upgrading from drum brakes to disc brakes is that disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes. So you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 P S I or higher. And that's kind of be kind of rare for your trailers that are currently set up for drum breaks. So it might take some doing to get everything converted over to be compatible. If you don't already have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines rated for that 1500 P S I we do have them available here at etrailer.com. Obviously they're not included in this kit so this isn't gonna be everything that you need but it is going to give you the two e-coated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight pre-installed 9/16th inch diameter wheel bolts on each. You're also gonna get 16 of these 9/16th inch zinc plated steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. You've got your two e-coated cast iron calipers as well as the two e-coated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets that you can see here on the backside. These do have the four-bolt brake flange configuration so they are going to be very easy to get mounted on your trailer. I do wanna make sure you point out that I've got these mounted on top just for display purposes for balance but when you actually go to install these they're gonna be mounted on the side. That side support design puts all the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts themselves. So it's gonna help your bolts last longer. You are going to have four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts that are going to hold our calipers onto our brackets. The kit is also going to have your inner and outer races pre-installed. Those will house your inner and outer bearings. They will just fit right inside those races make sure everything is rotating smoothly. This kit is also going to be lubricated with grease. So we've got our inner grease seals here and our easy lube grease caps for the outside. So these do have the rubber plug that you can easily remove. So if you have an easy lube spindle you can put your grease gun through there pump some grease in and make it much easier for you. But like I said, this is going to be a great kit for those of you who are wanting to upgrade from your drum breaks to disc brakes and your trailer's not gonna be in a very corrosive environments frequently.
