Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

Pre-Greased Hubs

A trailer hub with the grease cap taken off shows greased bearings

The pre-greased hubs in this kit come with the bearings, races, and seals already installed, which makes for a faster install time and less mess to deal with. After you've put on the grease caps and lug nuts (included), you'll be ready to roll.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I ordered two axles to upgrade my trailer capacity to what the frame is rated for, 12,000lbs. The axles have great bearing seats and backing plate studs. The backing plates are fully assembled and ready to connect to the wires already installed into the axle tubes. The hub assembly went smooth and only one set of break shoes needed adjustment. A good buy along with the 5 fully assembled tires and wheels.

by:

Great value. I upgraded a 3500lb trailer and with the added brake it really helps. I use it to haul tools around so it handles the weight much better. Towing is a breeze now. Installation was easy as well. I will be buying more axles and parts in the future.

by:

I am missing the axle tubes for the 2 axles. I called and spoke to Paula on Saturday about this issue. I expect that UPS left it at their facility Thanks.

by:

Could you arrive on time reasonable price Good customer service.

I used these axles to upgrade my travel trailer suspension.they Seem to be a good quality item. Good paint job on the axles. Compared to axles that came with the travel trailer. Which helps living on the coast.

by:

Exactly what I ordered packaged nice and pregreased bearings.

by:

etrailer is the best. I've been dealing with them for years. The orders are always right. The products are top-of-the-line.
Delivery was fast and free.. I have ordered online and I have called and spoken to the sales staff there who were very helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you have trailers and you don't give a trailer look, you are missing out.

by:

Aside from not received complete order the first time, I will still recommend etrailer for all your needs

by:

The axle fit perfectly. No instructions but not the first axle I've changed. Backing plate assembly should be pack a little better to keep them from being knocked around. Stellar service, fast shipping. Thanks

by:

Everything was going great on my new axle install today, until it wasn't. You shiped me the wrong lock washers for the brake backing plate. The correct nuts but the washers are to small. I'll have to pick them up because the customer is expecting the with to be done be today.

by:

looks like exactly what I needed, It is always challenging to find trailer parts, so many different types and sizes, the web listings and videos made it very simple, the items arrived very quickly. everything fits properly.

Very Happy!!

by:

I was worried about ordering trailer parts from a new company online. Product showed up fast and on time. Beat most other product pricing. A courtesy email was sent when product was delivered, making sure I was satisfied, giving me a direct contact incase I had any issues.
I haven't used the product yet but everything looks good.
Will order trailer product again in the future.

by:

Best thing I did was change axles to these. Went from 3500lb to these 7000lb with brakes on both. Tows and stops incredible.

by:

The axle seems good. Nice that the ball bearings were grease. We will see over the miles if all goes well. The delivery, besides the break assembly was quick. Not sure why the break assembly was not shipped with the rest.

by:

I wish I could give negative stars. My order arrived on time, but it was the wrong axle. The axle I ordered and paid for was a 3500 lb drop axle with electric brakes, they sent a bare 3500 lb drop axle. $[XX] difference. I immediately contacted customer service who required pictures of what I received. When I supplied them, they did not respond and even removed my order from their website so I can't track it to see if they're trying to make this right. They won't answer emails either because Ive sent a few. I'll try to get my credit card to refund me since they won't respond.

by:

Piece of cake to install. Pull out the old snapped axle install new axle. Bearings come pregreased.

by:

Was sent an 83 inch axle.

  • Should The Mobile Home Axles On a Trailer Be Replaced Or Can They Be Upgraded?
It will be best to replace your mobile home axles with a new axle like the Axle # e35SR. The mobile home axles were never designed for long term use and the hub components are nearly impossible to locate. Going to a standard axle will help you in the future when things need replaced. I have linked a video below on how to measure your axle for you to verify you have the correct measurements to find a replacement axle.

  • How to Choose the Correct Axle Capacity for Trailer
The axle capacity needs to be enough to handle the weight of the trailer plus whatever it is carrying. In other words, the axles need to meet or exceed the GVWR or gross vehicle weight rating. Assuming this is some kind of dump trailer with tandem axles I would say it weighs 2,000 lbs or more on its own. Add in the 9k lbs it can carry and you would be looking at 6k axles at a minimum, possibly 7k if the trailer is heavier. You will need to know the exact GVWR to select the right axle. For...

  • Replacement Trailer Axles for Mobile Home Axles on Trailer
Mobile home axles don't follow any standards, so it is no surprise you're having difficulty. The first thing I would do is get the hub face measurement which is the length of the axle. See the video below which shows how to measure. In addition to the length you will also need the axle capacity. You can see if there are axle tags that list the capacity. If not, there is no good way to find this information for a mobile home axle. Assuming these are homemade trailers, you will likely have...

  • How to Tell If 6K etrailer Axle Is Good Fit for Trailer
You can tell if the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # e35SR fits or not by looking at a few key specs; weight capacity, hub-face, and spring-center dimensions. This axle has a weight capacity of 6,000 lbs, a hub-face of 95", and a spring-center of 80". If these specs match what you have then you'll be able to use this as a replacement! Attached is a photo showing where those measurements are taken as well as a video where we show this as well. If you end up having different specs just...

You can definitely use the # e35SR. As you said, you can cut off the spring seats and weld on new ones to match your 78" measurement. Technically yes, you can use the 95" hub face and 80" spring center Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # e35SR to replace your 93" hub face, 78" spring center axle. You would need to have new spring seats welded on though, part # TRSS300.
