Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation - 2014 Honda CR-V RM-155

Today in our 2014 Honda CRV, well be installing the Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring Kit with bulb and socket, part number RM-155. To begin our install, well first need to remove the tail light assemblies. To remove the tail light assemblies, well open up the rear hatch and then remove the two fasteners that secure the tail light assembly to the body. Next, well go ahead and gently remove the tail light assembly from its position releasing the fasteners and being careful not to break the alignment tabs underneath. When the tail light assembly is pulled out, we can see the back of the tail light assemblies where well mount the bulb and socket. To mount the bulb and socket well first need to drill a hole under the back of the tail light assembly as per the instructions. Well use a 1-inch hole saw.

Now the hole drilled out, well need to fit the bulb and socket through our hole. The small tabs that go around the socket itself are flexible so that we can bend them as necessary for nice secure fit into our hole. Well go and bend them out as necessary and then fit the socket to our hole. For this application because the surface is not completely flat, well also use an additional sealer to help hold the socket in position.Well be using the Loctite RTV, part number LT37467. Well go ahead and put the RTV around the socket and then the socket into the hole.

Quick tip, to help prevent the sealant from getting on the bulb, I recommend to apply the sealer to the socket assembly and then install the socket assembly into the back of the tail light lens. Well take a zip tie and secure the tail light socket to the manufacturers wiring. Well cut the excess from zip tie and repeat the same process on the other side. Next, well get underneath the vehicle and go ahead route our 4-pole harness right behind the tail light assembly.Well raise our wiring to the bulb and socket kit to our 4-pole harness. Starting on the passenger side, well go ahead and cut off one end of the 4-pole harness.

We can go ahead and throw it away as it will not be used in this application. Then well go ahead and peel back the wires and start stripping it back. Note, well cut off the yellow wire short cause it will not be used here on the passenger side. Well go ahead and add the blue butt connectors and secure them. Well then being matching up with the bulb and socket wire.

Well match green to red, brown to brown and white to black.I recommend to wrap them up with some black electrical tape to help keep out any dirt, dust, debris or moisture. Well go ahead and secure the wiring as necessary, cut of the excess from our zip tie to clear up our install look and then reinstall the tail light assembly. Next well get underneath our vehicle and go ahead and route our 4-pole harness over to the drivers side and up behind the drivers side tail light assembly. This application maybe necessary to use a pull wire to assist in routing the wire. Pull wire can be a stiff piece of wire or in this case a piece of air tubing that we use to assist in routing up our new 4-pole harness.Once we have the pull wire in place, we can then tape our 4-pole harness to the pull wire with some black electrical tape and then pull it into position. Now, we have our 4-pole harness up behind the drivers side tail light assembly. Well go ahead and cut the white brown and yellow wiring in half. Well peel back both sides and strip them back. Well then take the two-inch that we just cut, twist them together and secure them to one side of the yellow butt connector. The other side, well match up with the tail light socket that we installed here in the drivers side. Itll be a brown to brown and red to yellow. Now, here on the drivers side before we connect the black wire to the white wire for our ground, well add an additional piece of white wire that can be taken off the 4-pole harness to our black wire. Twist it together and then connect it to the white wire that we ran over from the passenger side. Well take the other end of our additional white wire that were adding, cut off any excess, strip it back and add the blue ring terminal provided with our install kit. Well use a self-tapping screw to make this connection. Note, I recommend to find an area where the sheet metal doubles up for more secure ground. Here behind the tail light assembly is a good location. With the ground secured, well go ahead and wrap up our wires with some black electrical tape. Then well take the 4-pole harness and route it back down underneath the vehicle. With our wires routed, well go ahead and secure them as necessary and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. Next, we can go ahead and reinstall the drivers side tail light assembly. With that done, well back underneath the vehicle and start routing our new 4-pole harness up to the front of the vehicle and ultimately to our base plate bar.Keep in mind were routing our wires with many moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as exhaust. As we route the wire well also secure it with some zip ties as necessary. For this application it may also be necessary to loosen or remove some of the underbody panels when routing your wire. With the wire routed and secured well go ahead and mount it to the base plate using the hardware provided with the base plate. Well go ahead and secure the mount with self-tapping screw directly to the base plate electrical mount then well go ahead and route the 4-pole to it and secure it with a zip tie.Next, well take any excess wire from our 4-pole harness and secure it to the backside of the base plate. Now the wiring is secured, well go ahead and clean up our install look and this will complete the install of the Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring Kit with bulb and socket part number RM-155 in conjunction with the Loctite RTV part number LT37467 on our 2014 Honda CRV. .

Went pretty easy. Holes for bulbs do fit in the rear lights. I had to use a 6way plug that had a 4way line on it also.

Always completely satisfied with Etrailer service and products! Jamie B is very knowledgable and courteous!

by:
2020 Chevrolet Equinox

This was a good option for our 2020 Chevy Equinox because it does not tie into the tow vehicle electrical system and runs directly from the Motorhome electrical system.

Put this into a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Good directions. Drilled out the lower part of tail light housing and install bulb sockets into it. You may have to deburr the tail light housing a bit and manipulate the tangs on the bulb socket but is fine. I put in 1157 LED bulbs :) Good stuff!

by:
1998 Jeep Wrangler

This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product.

easy install one year later still working perfectly

2013 Ford Fiesta

Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later.

Continues to work as it should! Very pleased with end product after installation by myself and continue to be happy every time I hook up since! Nice item! And customer service...Well they checked back with me a year later to see if I needed anything. How is that for the best customer service around! A

2013 Dodge Durango

I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good.

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.

2010 Jeep JK

Great idea. After years of towing with magnetic lights now all I have to do is plug it in, and I'm done.
The kit kit comes with more parts and wire than I needed and was simple to install on my 2010 JK.

Thanks Patrick. It works so well I forgot I had it.

I like this product and would definitely buy it again. I like not having to splice into the vehicle wiring and install diodes, etc. It is a clean installation with good instructions. All I have to do to hook up the lights is raise the hood of the towed car and pull out the pigtail and hook it to the motorhome. It is powered by the motorhome and does not run down the battery in the towed car. Great product.

great kit i have installed them before

I have used the brake light wiring kit on 2 other towed vehicles. It is an easy install, does not compromise the original factory wiring and works well.

Robert

Easy install, working well 1 year later.

by:

This kit really simplifies wiring tail lights on a vehicle that will be towed. No cutting into the vehicle's wiring and adding isolation diodes. Very functional and easy to install.

Kim P.

1/26/2016

The parts are working perfectly. Thank you.

by:

Kit was of good quality components. I would recommend about twice a much protective wire wrap along with extra of the smaller butt connectors. Fortunitely I had what I needed on hand. I also used a larger ring terminal.

Works great. 2002 Jeep Wrangler tail lights have plenty of room for the extra tail light bulbs.

by:
2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Good instructions. Everything need is included for 4flat connections. One bulb socket arrived with the ground (black) wire loose in the bag. The solder joint had failed. Resoldered but had to remove the other wires and rubber insert from the bulb socket to avoid melting. Not a shining example for Roadmaster.

Nice to not have to splice into vehicle wiring harness. Separate bulb assembly in existing tail light housing works great for towing our "TOAD" behind motor home.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic

A very clever idea for an easy, neat, simple installation to safely operate tail lights on a towed vehicle. We installed this kit on our 2017 Chevy Sonic and it works great.

Still working fine.

I really didn't want to install a separate bulb kit but our Equinox light was not compatible with our motor home. I was also installing a trailer lighting harness for the Equinox at the same time and doing them together made a lot of sense. I found this kit to be easy to manage and that drilling into the rear light housings not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I would share a picture of the result but fortunately there is nothing to see - everything fit right into the Equinox's rear lamp structure. I compared the original lights with those from the kit driven by the RV and found them to be a great match. I upgraded the kit bulbs to LEDs for greater longevity.

by:
1999 Mazda Miata

I purchased this wiring kit for use in my 1999 Mazda Miata.
I did not want to cut into the OEM wiring harness, even using the diode method to safeguard the system. I felt that the fully separate wiring harness was more to my way of thinking for getting my car ready to tow.

I did not follow the included instructions that said to run the flat 4 wiring beneath the car, zip tying it along the way free of the exhaust and moving parts. I ran it through the firewall, beneath the dash, under the center console, and under the carpeting back into the trunk area. I then installed the bulb holders as instructed in my OEM Miata taillight fixtures.
I am happy to have all the wiring up and out of the way of potential road hazard damage, as well as the hot and/or moving parts beneath the car.

It works perfectly, and I am glad that I purchased this kit, and also that I decided to install it the way I felt best to do so.
It took much longer my way, but I'll never have to mess with it again.

  • Can A 2006 Ford Explorer XLT Use A Demco Universal Diode Wiring Harness
Oscar, 2006 Ford Explorer models unfortunately can't use a universal diode wiring kit so you'd have to either go with a bulb and socket light kit like part # RM-155 or plug-in magnetic lights like part # TL21RK. If you decide to go with the bulb and socket kit I recommend checking out the attached video below to help walk you through the installation process.
