Use your towed car's signal lights without tapping into its wiring. This self-contained wiring kit bypasses your Chevrolet Sonic's electrical system, eliminating any concerns over violating the manufacturer's warranty.
Features:
Note: Towed car must have enough room inside the tail light lens housing for an extra bulb and socket.
Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer installation instructions and specs for complete information.
Today on our 2013 Chevy Sonic we'll be installing the Roadmaster Tail Light wiring kit with bulb, part number RM-155. In conjunction with our Pollak 4-Pole Round Pin socket, part number PK11410. To begin our install we'll open up the rear hatch. We're going to be removing the tail light assembly to make it easier to install the wiring harness. To start, we'll go ahead and remove the two fasteners on each side that secure the tail light assembly. Once we remove the fasteners we'll go ahead and pop the tail light housing out. We'll then rotate the light so that we can let it hang here until we're ready to make our wiring connections.
Now with the driver's side done, we'll go ahead and move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. To assist in popping the tail light assembly out we're just going to be using a flat plastic pry bar. You can also use a flat blade screwdriver. Be careful when popping the tail light assembly out that you don't break the alignment tabs off that are underneath. Now with our tail light assemblies out we'll need to locate a suitable spot for installing the new tail light bulb. We'll be installing it into the back of the housing of the tail light assembly for what is the brake and running light circuit on the car side.
That would be this section here. We'll be installing a new bulb into the back of the tail light assembly and this will run both our running light, turn signal and brake signal circuits. Next, using a one inch hole saw bit we can open up the back of the tail light so that we can install our new bulb and socket. Once we have the hole made we can go ahead and install the socket into it. We'll bend the tabs along the outer edge of the socket as necessary to get a nice tight fit to hold it in position.
With the driver's side done we repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now with our bulb and sockets installed we're ready to start wiring up our new 4-pole harness. This will be the 4-pole harness that can run to the front of the vehicle and ultimately get hooked up to the tow vehicle. For this application we'll not be using the 4-pole plug that's on the end of the wire so we're going to go ahead and cut it off. This will make it easier to route and install our wiring. Next we'll also use a pull wire which can be a stiff piece of wire or in this case a piece of air tubing to assist the routing our wiring down and underneath the vehicle.
Take the wiring harness, tape it to the pole wire and then pull it underneath the vehicle. Now with our wiring fed underneath we'll go ahead and route it over to the driver's side. As we route behind the fascia, we'll go up over the frame and then up behind the driver's side tail light assembly. Once again we'll use a pull wire to assist the routing. We'll go ahead and tape the wiring harness to the pull wire. We'll then use the pull wire to pull it in position. Now with the wiring pulled up behind the tail light assembly we'll go ahead and remove the pull wire. Here on the driver's side we'll only be using three of the four wires. We will not need the green wire as it's for the passenger side turn and break signal. We're going to go ahead and cut that off short. Next, I've got plenty of wire pulled here to run to our harness but we're going to go ahead and cut off some. We'll go ahead and cut it short and then remove the white wire from the cut off piece. The white wire will act as a ground that will go straight from the tail light assembly to the body of the vehicle. Go ahead and strip back all our wires now. We can also strip back the wires coming from the pig tail from our bulb and socket. Black will be ground, brown will be our running light circuit and red will be the breaking and turn signal circuit. For our turn and brake signal circuit we'll take the yellow wire from our 4-pole harness, add a blue butt connector to one side and a yellow wire and a red wire to the other. For the running light circuit we'll match up color for color, brown to brown. For our ground circuit it'll be the black wire on our new bulb and socket side, white wire on the 4-pole harness side and the additional piece of white wire that we cut off of our 4-pole so then we can make a ground that will go directly behind the tail light assembly here to the body of the vehicle. To add three wires to one connection point, we'll twist the two together and then use one of the yellow butt connectors. Measure out the length of wire we need for our ground wire, cut off any excess, strip it back and add the ring terminal provided with the install kit. Then using a self-tapping screw we can attach it directly to the body of the vehicle. When looking for our ground point we recommend to find a location where the sheet metal doubles up for a more secure ground. Once all our connections are made we'll go ahead and wrap up the butt connectors with some black electrical tape to help keep them free from dirt, dust, debris and moisture. Now with the wiring secure we can go ahead and re-install the tail light assembly. Now we'll move underneath our vehicle and secure our wiring as we route over to the passenger side. Once we have the wiring secured, we'll go ahead and cut off the excess and the zip ties. Now we're back behind the passenger side tail light assembly where we started with our 4-pole harness. We'll make sure we've got plenty of length to work with and we'll go ahead and cut the harness except the yellow wire. We'll go ahead and peel away the wires from each other, separating the four. With the protective coating on it it can be easier to cut the coating first. Using a utility knife we'll carefully cut between the wires. We'll give ourselves plenty of working room and go ahead and cut all but our yellow wire. We'll strip back both ends of the cut wires. We can also strip back the wires coming from our tail light socket. The green wire that came over from the driver's side will get cut off as it will not be used. Now with all our wires stripped back, we'll start with the green wire connection that will route to red wire for our tail light socket. Using a blue butt connector we'll connect the two. This will connect the circuit for the passenger side turn signal and brake circuit. Our two remaining connections will be our brown to brown running light circuit and with the two white wires and the black wire from our tail light socket. Each of these connection points will have three wires. Now with all our connections made we're ready to wrap up our connection points with some black electrical tape and secure our wiring as necessary. If we had a 4-pole flat umbilical connection going from the towed vehicle to our towing vehicle we would leave the 4-pole flat connector on here. However, we're going to be using a 4-round connection point so to make it easier in routing our wire, we're going to go ahead and cut off this connection as we'll be rewiring it anyway. We'll then take the 4-pole harness and feed it back underneath the vehicle where we'll take it and route it up to the front of the vehicle near the license plate frame to the base plate wiring plug mount. With our wiring routed and secured we'll go ahead and reinstall the tail light assembly here on the passenger side. Next we'll move underneath the vehicle and start routing our wire up to the front of the vehicle. Keep in mind when routing any of your wires, stay away from moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as the exhaust. There's one push pin fastener, two bolts and three T20 Torx bit fasteners that will need to be removed. With our wiring here to the front we can cut off any excess. We'll then strip back the wires and install them into the four round connector for this application. To install the wires we'll need to remove the set screw here in the housing. Open up the front and we'll push the connector out. Then we'll take the four wires, run them through the housing. Following our Roadmaster guide we'll go ahead and install the green and looking at the plug will be the upper right hand corner. Then our yellow, then just below the yellow will be the white wire. To the lower right will be our ground and then below the green, left lower, looking at the plug again, will be the running light circuit. Once we have our wires installed and secured we'll then go ahead and reinstall them into the housing, re-installing the set screw. Now we can go ahead and mount the new 4-pole round connector. Now that our connector's secured this will complete the install of the Roadmaster Tail Light wiring kit with bulb and socket part number RM-155 in conjunction with our Pollak round pin socket, part number PK11410 on our 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. .

Use your towed car's signal lights without tapping into its wiring. This self-contained wiring kit bypasses your vehicle's electrical system, eliminating any concerns over violating the manufacturer's warranty.Went pretty easy. Holes for bulbs do fit in the rear lights. I had to use a 6way plug that had a 4way line on it also.
Always completely satisfied with Etrailer service and products! Jamie B is very knowledgable and courteous!
This was a good option for our 2020 Chevy Equinox because it does not tie into the tow vehicle electrical system and runs directly from the Motorhome electrical system.
Put this into a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Good directions. Drilled out the lower part of tail light housing and install bulb sockets into it. You may have to deburr the tail light housing a bit and manipulate the tangs on the bulb socket but is fine. I put in 1157 LED bulbs :) Good stuff!
This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product.
easy install one year later still working perfectly
it worked well
very well made and packaged
Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later.
I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good.

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.
Great customer service fast delivery and reasonable price. Been purchasing from ETrailer for years
Great idea. After years of towing with magnetic lights now all I have to do is plug it in, and I'm done.
The kit kit comes with more parts and wire than I needed and was simple to install on my 2010 JK.

Thanks Patrick. It works so well I forgot I had it.
I like this product and would definitely buy it again. I like not having to splice into the vehicle wiring and install diodes, etc. It is a clean installation with good instructions. All I have to do to hook up the lights is raise the hood of the towed car and pull out the pigtail and hook it to the motorhome. It is powered by the motorhome and does not run down the battery in the towed car. Great product.

Works great! Would definitely recommend it.
great kit i have installed them before
I have used the brake light wiring kit on 2 other towed vehicles. It is an easy install, does not compromise the original factory wiring and works well.

Easy install, working well 1 year later.
This kit really simplifies wiring tail lights on a vehicle that will be towed. No cutting into the vehicle's wiring and adding isolation diodes. Very functional and easy to install.

The parts are working perfectly. Thank you.
Kit was of good quality components. I would recommend about twice a much protective wire wrap along with extra of the smaller butt connectors. Fortunitely I had what I needed on hand. I also used a larger ring terminal.

Works great. 2002 Jeep Wrangler tail lights have plenty of room for the extra tail light bulbs.
Good instructions. Everything need is included for 4flat connections. One bulb socket arrived with the ground (black) wire loose in the bag. The solder joint had failed. Resoldered but had to remove the other wires and rubber insert from the bulb socket to avoid melting. Not a shining example for Roadmaster.

no issues, working as expected
Nice to not have to splice into vehicle wiring harness. Separate bulb assembly in existing tail light housing works great for towing our "TOAD" behind motor home.

Still works great after a year of towing to many destinations.
A very clever idea for an easy, neat, simple installation to safely operate tail lights on a towed vehicle. We installed this kit on our 2017 Chevy Sonic and it works great.

Thanks for the follow up. Everything is working just fine, no problems, nothing but good performance.
Great product, not a bad install and works great. I chose to cut off both 4 flat connectors and I installed a 4 round connector with spring cover on the front of my CRV. Looks and work out great.

Still working fine.
I really didn't want to install a separate bulb kit but our Equinox light was not compatible with our motor home. I was also installing a trailer lighting harness for the Equinox at the same time and doing them together made a lot of sense. I found this kit to be easy to manage and that drilling into the rear light housings not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I would share a picture of the result but fortunately there is nothing to see - everything fit right into the Equinox's rear lamp structure. I compared the original lights with those from the kit driven by the RV and found them to be a great match. I upgraded the kit bulbs to LEDs for greater longevity.
I purchased this wiring kit for use in my 1999 Mazda Miata.
I did not want to cut into the OEM wiring harness, even using the diode method to safeguard the system. I felt that the fully separate wiring harness was more to my way of thinking for getting my car ready to tow.
I did not follow the included instructions that said to run the flat 4 wiring beneath the car, zip tying it along the way free of the exhaust and moving parts. I ran it through the firewall, beneath the dash, under the center console, and under the carpeting back into the trunk area. I then installed the bulb holders as instructed in my OEM Miata taillight fixtures.
I am happy to have all the wiring up and out of the way of potential road hazard damage, as well as the hot and/or moving parts beneath the car.
It works perfectly, and I am glad that I purchased this kit, and also that I decided to install it the way I felt best to do so.
It took much longer my way, but I'll never have to mess with it again.
This time it went without a hitch. last time was another thing. hopefully moving forward its all good.
thankyou
Watched video and installed with no issues. Great product! Will buy again for future vehicles.

Continues to work as it should! Very pleased with end product after installation by myself and continue to be happy every time I hook up since! Nice item! And customer service...Well they checked back with me a year later to see if I needed anything. How is that for the best customer service around! A
