Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Brenta-C 4x4 chains are great winter-weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these pewag chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Connect the ends of the chain

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the black cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link at the top of the tire.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the red tensioning chain through the red clip and tug it until it's tight. Then stretch the hook across the tire. The hook should face away from your tire so your wheel won't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

AJ: What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be checking out these Pewag Brenta-C tire chains on our 2020 Toyota RAV4. It's going to be a great way to help you get through that snow and ice when it gets rough out there, get more traction with these chains, more grip on the road. Just means safe for all driving conditions in the snow. Let's check them out.The chains themselves are made out of tightened grip steel, and they are individually delinked chains, so that's going to help it dig down into the snow and the ice and get a good grip. The pattern of the chain is a diamond pattern.

So, it gets that from . you can see the diamond shape here and up here at the top. That's just more chain around the tire than you normally get. So, it's going to have a better grip in that snow and ice and be low-profile so that when you're driving, it doesn't feel as bad as some of the other ones. The lighter pattern can be a little rough when you're driving because that's good for starts and stop but overall driving, not the best.

The diamond pattern you're going to like because it's going to be a nicer drive than the other ones.Upfront, you have the coated chains. Those are going to be nice if you're putting them on in the actual snow so they won't be freezing your hands just in case you don't have gloves. We recommend you do use gloves but if you don't, you got these so you don't have to worry about them getting too cold, maybe getting damaged from getting so cold. It'll be fine. It's also, color-coded on how you need to put it together.

You attach the red parts to each other, besides the part on the back, but you can see the red chain here goes to the red hook. The red chain here, wraps around this. You got this one here, this plastic clip that it goes through to take a little bit more of the droop out of the chain to get it nice and tight. And then you got the rubber tensioner up here. So, it's a little bit of a pull to get it to attach it.

But that's a good thing because it holds it all together while you're driving.Another nice thing about these chains you might not think about is the plastic case they come in. Sometimes they come in a bag or a nylon bag and the chains usually rip through them right away so you don't get much use out of those bags. This plastic case is going to hold up way better to these chains on the inside. Plus it keeps all your chains together. So, if you have it in the back of your vehicle, you don't have to worry about them spreading out, taking a lot of room. Maybe they don't fit in where you put the spare tire part of it. It's going to fit in this. This is easier to store like this. It's going to keep it all together. And they're also really easy to install. Let's check out how we did it. First off you want to lay your chains out and make sure there's not any breaks in the chains or twists that are going to cause a problem when you go to put them on your tire. Judging by the way it looks, it looks just fine. Like I said, no breaks, no twists. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the chain, slide it behind the tire. It naturally splits here and that's where the tires meant to go. So, let's just go ahead and slide it back there. And see how it's split. Now we'll go up top and attach the chain.Cable is going to go towards the back. You got to put that hook through that hole. Now it's attached there. And then we'll bring the chains across the top of the tire. Pull a little bit. We got it up front and attach the red chain to the red hook. That's going to hold it together here at the top making it easier to adjust the chain and not have to make sure everything's sticking together. Looks like it came across pretty nicely. You got the gray part of the chain and the red going along the sidewall of the tire. Then we'll bring our chain through this way, pull it tight and you pull it up, that way it catches there. And then, it's got a self tensioner that we'll just bring up, attach it to the top. Actually, we can get a little bit more out of it, if we come over here and use this red catch here. And then we'll get a little bit more of a pull out of the rubber tensioner. There we go. That's much tighter.Something I want to point out is we had to readjust a little bit. That's why we recommend doing it in your driveway or in your garage the first time you put these chains on. That way, you're not dealing with this for the very first time in the actual snow. Now I did have to make some adjustments to the initial setup we had. You can see that I inaudible 00:04:49 . later on in the red chain, I originally had it here, I had to hook it here instead. That way it just pulled up a little bit more here so that when I attached the rubber tensioner here I had to pull it up quite a bit to attach it to this one, but it's got it nice and snug on there now. There's no drooping of the chain over here. So, I feel way more comfortable about going down the road like this.Overall, great chains. They wasn't too bad to install, as you saw me do. Like I said, just made some slight adjustments here and here. The self tensioner, I really like because it's just not an extra piece that's loose, that you can lose. This is altogether. It's all together system. You don't need any tools to tie anything down. You just throw these on and you're good to go in the snow. Well, thanks for hanging out. I hope this helped.

Ordering was easy, delivery was quick. Product looks as I expected but haven't tried them yet.

Finally found the time to do a dry fit. The chains appear to fit well. These chains are for a 3/4 ton diesel truck. I'm a little concerned about some of the perimeter chain links on the outside face of the chain installation. These are used to set the final tension of the chain. There are several that are not welded. Not sure how strong the steel is for those links, but am concerned that under load, the links could open up in some situations releasing the tensioning. Must not be a problem due to other good reviews, but I will have to keep an eye on those links if I ever put those chains into service.

by:

work perfectly as expected. great produ ct!!!

by:

One thing to remember, when putting on or off the chains make sure the free red chain with the bungee and hook at its end is clear. Ideally the whole thing should face you. Do not yank the chain quickly either putting it on or off. If you do that red chain may flip up and the bungee hook around a brake line. If it does you will need to go under the vehicle to unhook it.

Once you figure your way around that mistake, they go on/off as you might expect.

as advertised! I am disabled and being cold is not an option for me. after watching a video on youtube and reading the instructions ( pictures included) i installed these chains in 4 mins BOTH SIDES.
first time iv been off the ranch in 6 days! I have a 2007 kia sportage with goodrich 215/70/R16 allterrain tires and couldnt get traction because of the snow over ice condictions on steep hills.
no problem now! couldnt believe how easy they r to install and they never slipped once!! I would also recomend these for seniors and younger drivers ( they r that easy to install)!

by:

Very easy to install. It took me 2 minutes, no fussing or pulling on anything, excellent build. Will buy again
