The Thule Self-Tensioning Tire Chains, part # TH00023100, will fit tires from 14- to 18-inches so your 235/45/R17 tires are compatible. It is a good idea to check your 540i owners manual to see if the manufacturer indicates any restrictions or specific recommendations regarding use of tire chains on the rear drive wheels.
These premium-grade Thule snow chains use a manganese-nickel alloy steel for superior performance and durability on ice and snow. Since they sit only on the tire treads they will not scratch your rims plus their unique design means that there are no clearance issues between the chains and the components inside the wheel well, which makes these compatible with limited-clearance vehicles that require S-Class chains.
Best of all, these offer the simplest installation available: simply place chain on top of rear tire, attach to wheel lug nut and drive. The chains tighten and center on the tire as the wheels spin. A product review video is linked to show installation.
The chains come with 17mm and 19mm lug nut adapters but if larger ones are needed they are available separately: 22mm adapters are part # TH1500052581. Please note these chains are intended for on-road use only.
I have linked an article on tire chains that provides details on the types available, safety precautions and state-by-state regulations governing their use.
