When a vehicle owner's manual or manufacturer says something like Use only Volvo approved chains that means they want you to buy them from Volvo or a Volvo dealer when in reality they should just tell you what makes chains approved or not.

Basically you will need Class S compatible chains or cables because there is limited clearance between the tires and vehicle components. Also, on your vehicle the chains should only be used on the front wheels. If you are able to turn off any type of traction control the vehicle might have be sure to do so when chains are installed.

It looks like your 2008 Volvo S80 could have 1 of several different tire sizes. If it has 225/50-17 tires the CG9 chains # TH00023100 have links that are only 9mm thick so they are Class S rated and would be a great option.

If you have 245/75-17 tires then the easiest to install Class S chains by far are # TH04115102. They can install (with some practice) in seconds. Take a look at the video I have linked. Another option are cables with tensioners # TC339DC. Cables in general require very little clearance.

If you have 245/75-18 tires then the option that requires the least clearance are the K-Summit chains # TH02230K44. They only sit on the tread with no part of them around on the backsides of the tires. If you want a less expensive option you can use cables, # TC343DC.
