Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Service and product were excellent

2015 Toyota Prius

The front end hitch for my 2013 ford 150 arrived very quickly and fit perfectly without any drilling. I did have to eliminate the lower forward wind diverter and only needed a small notch out of the upper plastic shield. It took me about two hours with the help of my 4 year old grandson. Probably would have taken me about an hour and a half without the help.
It looks and works great except even though maneuvering the trailer is very easy , the visibility behind the boat I'm pushing is non existent. I need forward view mirrors instead of rear view mirrors.
I recommend this hitch and etrailer.

I just tested these tire cables for fit. Installing them is not as easily done as the etrailer video indicates. So, to all of the reviewers who've not even tried them on yet (how can one usefully review an unused product?), I'd suggest that you practice doing so before you need them. These cables are for a front wheel drive, 1997 Honda Accord wagon and are not my first tire chains. The installation process is a bit different than that shown in the video. Installing them alone, in ideal conditions, is somewhat awkward and time consuming. Installing them on a chain installation pull-out, with your gloves on, when it's very cold, windy and snowing, is even more awkward and time consuming. Anyway, today it was warm at about 30 degrees F. Still, it took me about 20-30 minutes to get them on and install the chain tighteners (the chains needed the tighteners for a good fit as they were a bit too loose without them on the 195/60 R15 tires). There being no snow, yet, I settled for test driving them, at 20-30 mph, on the dirt road that passes by my house. They stayed in place and needed no readjustment. Durability is still a question, thus, 4 stars rather than 5. The test finished, the chains were removed, cleaned, sprayed with WD-40 to prevent rust, then packed back into the included carrying bag. My first line of attack regarding driving on snow and ice is always an excellent set of winter tires. The chains are simply back-up for those very rare times when the tires aren't enough and/or the authorities won't allow you to continue on your way without having tire chains installed on your vehicle.

2006 Hyundai Elantra

Worked well enough on flat, to slight incline. Wasn't great for hillier, snowy/icy sections in Truckee, CA. The bag it comes with is too small and the zipper broke after first use. Part of that could be me not knowing how to best fold up the chains (pay close attention how they were wrapped the first time you take them out), but it shouldn't be this difficult to get them back in without ruining the bag.

But for the price, can't really complain more than I just did...

Follow the reviews. I ordered this on a Wednesday and got it the following Monday. Came in two mini size duffel bags (1 set each bag). The shipping was quick, product is as described (I haven't yet put them on)

Excellent service. Already recommended a friend to get a set of his own as well.

Thank you!

A nice, simple set of cable chains. I did lay them out and look at the connections to make sure it all looked good. I like the nylon bag they came in compared to older plastic boxes that were impossible to get the chains back into.

Luckily I did not have to use the chains thus far. We go up to Canada where we have a place in the woods. But there was no snow this year. So, I am afraid, I wont be able to add anything to my review.

If you have to drive while it is actually snowing, do not leave home without it. I have used this product before and had to buy a new one as the old one was worn out. It does the job.

  • Recommended Hitch Adapter For 2016 Toyota Prius V With Class l Trailer Hitch To Carry Bike Rack
We do not have a trailer hitch designed to fit your 2016 Prius. As manufacturers design and make them available, we do add them to our website so our customers can order them. The tire chains I recommend for your 2016 Prius are the Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1030. These are made of low-carbon steel and are designed with a low profile that means a smoother ride. These also come with tensioning rings that help secure the chains on the vehicle. • Recommended Tensioners For Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains
The tensioners I recommend are the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters, part # PW105. If your tires are 15 to 18-inch tires these will work well with the Glacier Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1030. I like these because if one arm should fail, the balance of the arms on these tensioners stay secured to the chains.

  • Are Rubber Adjusters Necessary for Glacier Cable Snow Chains
The rubber adjusters aren't required but are highly recommended to help keep the # PW1030 cable chains securely in place. The actual adjuster needed will depend on your wheel diameter. For wheels smaller than 16 inches, use # PW100 or # PW99 for wheels larger than 16 inches. Each set includes two adjusters.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2012 Volkswagen Jetta for Use on Mountain Roads
Your first step when considering tire chains on any vehicle is a check of the owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding their use. Many passenger cars are limited to using special low-profile S-Class chains that do not require too much wheel well clearance. Before purchasing any tire chain check your vehicle's manual carefully and if in doubt speak to your local dealership. The key to selecting suitable tire chains is to match the chain to your tire size. A 2012 Volkswagen...

The maximum recommended speed for the Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Cables, part # PW1030, is 30 MPH. With any snow cables or snow chains, you want to stay below the maximum speed rating of the tire cables or chains. We do not have available any snow chains that are able to be used when traveling 50 MPH or faster. You should not use snow chains on dry or uncovered pavement, only when there is snow or ice on the ground. When mounting snow chains on your vehicle, it is most effective and recommended...

If you are looking for some chains that you do not plan on using very often, I recommend come simple cables, # PW1030, with tensioner # PW100 (for passenger vehicle) or # PW99 (for light trucks). But you will need to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine if there are any recommendations or restrictions on the use of cables or chains on the vehicle. If you go with the cables then you would want to add rubber adjusters # PW100 which are designed more for passenger car tires up to 16 inches. They help provide the proper tension on the chains.
