Yakima RailBar

This premium rack mounts between your raised, factory side rails for a from-the-factory look. While most other aftermarket racks mount on top of the side rails with the bars positioned above the mount - creating a high profile - the Yakima RailBar system positions the bars between the side rails for an ultra-low profile.

Aerodynamic Airfoil Design

Yakima RailBar airfoil shape

Designed with the aerodynamic shape of an owl wing in mind, the RailBar produces less drag - and therefore less noise - than any other roof-rack style on the market. But don't let the elegant appearance and clean lines fool you - this roof rack is also sturdy and hard working so you can carry loads of gear. This means your vehicle will still look great inside and out.

Yakima RailBar airflow diagram

The RailBar features sleek, airfoil-style crossbars that are shaped like tapered wings. These lightweight aluminum bars have been shown to reduce drag by up to 70 percent when compared with round and square bars. They do this by putting the air back together quickly after it passes over and under the crossbars. This practically eliminates the buzzing and humming associated with standard roof racks - no fairing required. Because these bars produce less drag, the gas mileage of your vehicle will be far less affected than it is with other roof racks. And because they're constructed of corrosion-resistant, lightweight aluminum, you never have to worry about them rusting or affecting the load-carrying capacity of your roof.

Built-in Channels with Push-Down Access

Yakima RailBar built-in channel with rubber strip

The built-in channels include a soft rubber strips that can be pushed down into the channels when you mount accessories, so you don't have to cut or trim them as you would with other slotted crossbars. And this means you'll likely never have to buy replacement strips.

Hassle-Free Installation

Yakima RailBar adjustment screw tightened

All you need for installation is the included hex wrenches, which store inside the towers. To mount the rack, simply remove the covers from the towers, slide the crossbars in and out of the towers as needed until they are centered on your roof, and then tighten the adjustment screws with the hex keys. Replace the leg covers and the rack is ready to roll.

Yakima RailBar pivoting leg

The mounting clamps - or towers - of the crossbars are constructed of glass-filled plastic that is strong, rigid, and UV and impact resistant. These clamps pivot slightly to accommodate the taper of your roof. Each clamp is also lined with soft rubber pads to prevent scratches and abrasions on your side rails.

Same Key System Locks

SKS Lock Cores

The crossbars are compatible with Yakima SKS lock cores (Y07204 - sold separately) that allow you to secure the rack to your factory side rails. These locks can help prevent theft of the crossbars by ensuring that they cannot be detached from your vehicle. And the locks keep your channel-mounted carriers and accessories safe by denying would-be thieves access to the built-in top slots. The SKS locks are all keyed alike so a single key opens all the locks. The locks can also be swapped out to make all of your Yakima products keyed alike.

Video Transcript for Yakima RailBar Crossbars Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Yakima Railbar Crossbars. These are going to come in silver and black and many different sizes ranging from 28-3/4 inches all the way to 40-1/2 inches. You can use our fit guide through etrailer.com to find out the best fit for your vehicle. The Yakima Railbars are a great solution for carrying your vehicle accessories on your roof whether those are bike racks, ski and snowboard carriers, or cargo baskets. This is going to be an aerodynamic low profile design, which is going to help to reduce wind noise and drag, and the weather strip on the inside can easily be pushed down, and we can use channel mounted accessories. The railbars are going to work with most Yakima roof rack accessories whether those are clamp on or channel mounted. Our towers are going to be made out of a glass-filled plastic, which will grip around our raised rails using a rubber gasket on top and the metal rubber coated clamp on bottom.

On each of our towers, we're going to have a plastic lock core here. That can be removed and replaced with a metal same key system lock core, part number Y07204, and that's going to allow you to secure your crossbars to your roof. The crossbars themselves are going to be made out of a lightweight aluminum, so they're corrosion resistant. They're either going to come in a satin chrome finish or a black powder coat finish. The Yakima railbars are going to come with a limited lifetime warranty and have a 165 pound weight capacity.

You do want to double check your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure your roof can withstand that much weight. Now that we've gone over some features, we're going to show you how to get this installed. Now to begin our install, we've gone ahead and removed our covers on our bars. We're going to have to extend out this end of our bar, and we can take off our tool. When we place this onto our vehicle, we want to make sure that the thicker end of our bar is facing towards the front. We need to loosen up our clamp just a bit more by using our included tool and loosening up our bolt here.

Then, we'll pull on the end, so that our clamp sits underneath our raised rail and the rubber portion is flesh against the rail on top. We can start to tighten everything down. Want to tighten this down just enough so that our bar stays in place, but we're still able to move it back and forth and adjust our crossbar spread. Now, we'll measure out our crossbar spread. I'm going to measure from center to center. I want this just to be even on each side.

Now, we'll go back taking our tool and tightening down our bolt, so that our crossbar is completely secure on our raised rails. Now, we'll take our cover. We want to line up this tab here with our weather channel. We'll push our end cap in until it locks into place, and now we're ready to load up our accessories. That's going to be our completed look at the Yakima Railbar Crossbars.

The RailBars arrived quickly and after looking at the video on installation and reading the instructions, I got it done on my own. A step ladder and a tape measure helped, and it was blazing hot out, but I think they are straight! It took some time to make sure they were straight and parallel.

I do not recommend putting the front bars all the way to the front, as the factory rails on the Crosstrek seem to curve out a little and it makes the RailBar supports gap a little where the crossbars enter. Mine are spaced at about 31". My husband has the Timberline towers and has them spaced at 33".

I did not leave the allen wrench in the towers after installation since I didn't buy the locks and would like to make it a bit harder for anyone to steal the rack.

Purchased the Yakima low profile roof rack crossbars for the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. etrailer made the purchase easy and it was delivered quickly. The packaging was nice and the fit on the car was perfect.

So far so good, I was in the market for a roof and ski rack for a while. I’m glad I went with the Yakima set up, I have no complaints set up was fast and simple. thank you Etrailer.com

by:

I love the product. That fact that it sits low helps for looks in my opinion. And there’s the option of adding locks to it. Which I plan on doing soon. I have no complaints!

Yakima produces great products as always... This went on my 2012 Acura TSX Wagin with factory rails. Install was straightforward and easy. eTrailer had the best price on these bars I could find anywhere, but didn't have them in stock so I had to wait almost 3 weeks for delivery once they received them from Yakima, but shipping was 2 days! Now I can mount my Yakima Skybox 16 on the car and double my cargo space, but still have room for all 4 passengers.

I am writing this review primarily to provide information regarding configuration issues with the newer GMC Acadia (2017 and newer) with a moon roof, as I had difficulty finding that information during my pre-purchase research. I had owned Chevy Tahoes for many years but decided to downsize to the Acadia for my most recent vehicle. My plan was to use a cargo basket to make up for the smaller cargo area in the Acadia. I realized that I would need to install crossbars because, unlike the Tahoe, the Acadia does not come with cross bars. What I did not realize (until after I bought the vehicle) is that the moon roof on the Acadia pops up and opens externally to the vehicle. Several reviews of various crossbars mentioned this issue as a potential problem.

I initially decided to install GMC factory issued crossbars, which are raised high enough to avoid interference with the moon roof. The factory cross bars are very sturdy, though not particularly attractive. However, the problem with the GMC crossbars is that they make a high pitched whistling sound at speeds above 50 mph -- not horrible, but just enough to annoy the heck out of me. I finally decided I couldn’t live with that noise anymore, so I ordered the Yakima (# Y00447-0048) and the Rola roof basket (# 59504). (I decided to go with the Rola basket because it is just the size I wanted and I will remove the basket when I’m not using it, so I couldn’t see spending a lot more money for a Yamaha or Thule basket.) The etrailer rep was helpful and thought these items would work with my vehicle, but she couldn’t be positive. However, she said that etrailer would give me a full refund if they didn’t work, so decided to take a leap of faith.

Bottom line – they work! The front crossbar, by itself, is far enough back that, when installed in the fully forward position, it does not interfere with the moon roof. However, when the hardware for basket is installed, you will need to move the front crossbar back about four inches to accommodate the hardware. (This means that the front crossbar is fully visible when looking up through the rear moon roof, which is not a big deal in my opinion.) The Rola basket mounts on risers that sit on top of the crossbars, which provide enough height to prevent the basket from interfering with the moon roof. (I assume other brands also use risers, which would likewise address the height issue.)

Bottom line – I’m very happy with the purchases. The Yakima crossbars are quiet and there’s no whistling – thank goodness. I saw some reviews mention problems with the end cap covers coming loose. You do need to be careful that the end cap covers are on securely. The Rola basket is very sturdy and suits my needs well. I agree with the reviews complaining about assembly with the rubber connecting gaskets and, like some of the other reviewers, I decided to omit them during the installation. (Particularly because the basket will not be installed full time, I don’t think this will be a problem.)

The Yakima crossbars are low profile, so they are very close to the roof of my VW Touareg and when mounting my kayaks makes them give a little and brings them even closer to the roof so the screws from the kayak rack that is attached to the crossbars touch the glass roof, so I removed them and never used them.

by:

The fit on on my 2016 Subaru Forester is just OK, not great. For the money, I would have expected a better fit with a cleaner look. The bars were harder than expected to install - especially the SKS locks, (purchased separately). The instructions for the Yakima railbar recommend that you install the railbar first and then add the sks locks. This is a mistake. Put them in before installing the crossbars. The sks lock might pop in easily but it might not. If not, you'll have to locate and rotate a small pinhole within the cavity for the sks lock and this is much easier done before the rack is on the car. Of my 4 sks locks, only 1 popped in easily. The other 3 were a PITA. So far, I'm not impressed. Hopefully I'll change my mind once I put a bike or a boat on it.

by:

Incredible set of bars at an even lower price than currently advertised (probably because I was an early adapter and immediately jumped on this new design as one of the first to purchase). Super-easy to install on my 2017 RAV4 and these bad boys look as sleek as they are rock solid. Only gripe is the plastic core plugs won't fit as tight once you remove them during installation which could be by design so you have to shell out another $60 for the locking SKS system from Yakima. Kind of sad if you think about it but won't let that detract from my well-deserved 5-star rating. etrailer customer support was top notch. If you buy these bars you will not be disappointed.

by:

Best bars. Worth the money. No issues. I've had them for a year and used for kayaks, bikes, ladders, pipe, and wood. Fit great on the 2019 Subaru Forester Premium factory roof rails.

by:

5 star - even though initially out of stock, from supplier, the Yakima roof rack rail bars arrived in a reasonable time frame. They were very simple to install on my 2019 Chevy Traverse, and I’m very pleased with the way their low profile design, mates to the factory side rails. They are just high enough for the load to clear the rear factory satellite antennae fin. These are much better looking than the high standoff Chevy rails, and provide a wider separation than the Chevy rails would have provided.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. These cross rails are low profile and cause little to no wind noise even at highway speeds. And they look great on my 2018 Chevy Traverse. The seller knew the correct lengths of each rail to send for the front and back rails.

The customer service was superb, and I did need their help. One of the rails had a defect that didn't allow a lock to be installed. A replacement was quickly received. But the replacement was too short and was the wrong one. Another was quickly received and I installed it on my car. It was easy to return the other rails in the boxes that the replacements came in. Mistakes happen and the true test of customer service is the responsiveness that is given to the problem. Both incidents with the rails were quickly resolved and followup emails were received to verify the corrections. I would definitely order again from seller and highly recommend doing business with them.

by:

Yakima, as always, makes good gear. I've been using their roof racks since they got started about 40 years ago, I think. But the most outstnding part of this was the excellent customer service from ETrailer. There was a delay getting the racks from Yakima, and Lori kept me informed with emails and phone calls, Nice to do business with you. Thank you.

by:

The sleek integrated brackets and overall low profile really make these cross bars stand out from the crowd. They simply look fantastic on my Tiguan. Much more appealing than the factory accessory option.

I greatly appreciated how etrailer created a kit specifically for my vehicle making the selection a breeze.

And kudos to etrailer for offering to expedite my order when one of the parts was not in stock thus missing the initial delivery date estimate. This was my first purchase from them and they really delivered. Great customer service.

by:

I searched for crossbars for my 2018 Jeep Cherokee. etrailer had exactly what I was looking for and it was in stock. Once I placed the order the Customer Service Team kicked into high gear. Called to makes sure the address was correct and there were no problems with accepting UPS. Once they got their answers , they shipped. It went out that day and I received it on time. Super easy to install. I would recommend buying from etrailer whenever you have a chance.

by:

Great rail to complete my car’s roof rack. Simple to install and looks good. I installed an existing bike rack to it and it works great. Delivery was quick from eTrailer as well.

by:

Solid quality products from this company. Yakima Cross bars arrived fast & intact NO packing issues!!

by:

Surprised that after perfect alignment and torquing to specs it deforms the plastic housing around the clamp. When you slide the cover on it just looks sloppy and cheap. Rubber gasket overhangs a lot on a 2020 Crosstrek. Going to return.

by:

I love Yakima products. These RailBars are simple and very sturdy. Shipping was fast and hassle free. The bars were installed less than ten minutes after I got the package. I cant wait to add Yakima accessories for my kayak, skis, and road bike.

by:

These bars are working great. I purchased them because they are low profile as I needed to minimize height to get the car into garage with box on top. I’ve always been satisfied with Yakima products.

by:

My wife just called me and said she has received it. She called me before I saw your email.

I have bought a couple of things from etrailer and must say the customer service is exceptional. Even a phone call to ask a question before a purchase everyone is polite and courteous.

I own a business with 47 employees so I know how hard customer service can be at times.

Keep up the great job

by:

Easy to find exactly what we wanted. The delivery was right on time when other outdoor utility items from other vendors were not. Great communication. Perfect fit for our vehicle and works great with our rooftop tent.

by:

Yakima rail bars arrived in a timely manner and work great. Excellent shopping experience.

by:

Fits well and looks great on VW Touareg. I was looking for a set of cross bars that minimized height and these do the job.

by:

As advertised! Great low profile fit to my 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Easy install. Thanks E Trailer
