What's up, everybody Adam here, with etrailer. Today, we're taking a look at the Yakima CoreBar Roof Rack System on our 2021 Mazda CX-5. If you have a naked roof on your Mazda CX-5, you have options to put a roof rack on here. I like Yakima, just cause it looks good, but this is gonna allow us to get a lot of our contents, whenever we're going on trips or whatever, up and onto our roof. So, everybody's a little bit more comfy in there, especially with the kiddos. Just having more space is always better.
So we can put kayaks up on here, we can put a cargo carrier up here, we can put some bike racks up on here as well. There's a lot of different stuff that we have here at etrailer, and having a roof rack on your vehicle just enables you to bring more stuff to wherever you're going. We're using the CoreBars right now. So, these are gonna be an upgrade from the round bars and the square bars, but it is gonna be a downgrade from some of the other aero bars that have T-slots on top. T-slots, it really isn't a necessity if you wanna maybe get half an inch, maybe an inch lower height whenever you put on your accessories, that's where the T-slots really shine.
But honestly, if you have any other wraparound accessories, this is gonna work. These are gonna be aerodynamic, so it kinda looks like an airplane wing, smaller in the back, thicker in the front. So, this is gonna kinda keep that road noise down a little bit. When it comes to the height of the actual bar, it's gonna be about 3 1/4 inches from our roof to the bottom of the bar. And to the very top of the bar, we're only adding about 4 1/4 inches to the height of our roof.
We opened up this sun roof, and it doesn't have any clearance issues, so you don't have to worry about that. So, you're not really disabling your vehicle from doing anything. Depending on what you plan on putting up on your roof, just be mindful that this roof rack system is gonna have a max capacity of 220 pounds. So just, it's something to think about, you don't wanna overload your roof. Another thing, if you are trying to do the Thule Hullavator, we're only gonna have about two inches from the tower out to the end.
So, this isn't gonna be a roof rack we can use the Hullavator with. I'm just a fan of Yakima. I may be biased. I just think they look the best, and the install wasn't really that bad. If there was a roof rack that's gonna be a little bit easier to install, It's gonna be your SeaSuckers for your naked roofs. It doesn't look as good, I can tell you that, but also it's just a lot more height added. So, I think this has a good balance. It's high enough to where we can use our sunroof, and it looks good. And that's kinda what it's all about. I don't wanna put something up there that's kind of an eyesore. So, if you wanna see how the install goes, stick around, we're gonna show you. Be sure to check your instructions. One, there's gonna be a measurement from the corner of our windshield up to the center of this foot. So, look in your instructions, and make sure to match that up. Basically, from here to the center of our feet. And then, there's gonna be another adjustment, or measurement, in the instructions. That's gonna tell us how much of a distance from the center of this foot to the center of the back bar. So, make sure to do all that. Take your measurements, make sure it's nice and right. And then, we can proceed with the back bar. Pretty much all we got to do is kinda flip this over. We're gonna take our foot, and there's this little door right here. We're gonna slide this out, and that's basically gonna give us access to this bolt, which controls this. So, that's where we're gonna put it in. We wanna make sure that the foot's gonna be facing out. So go ahead, and set it down on top of that. Take your tool, screw it in, once it gets pretty tight. We already kinda measured the width of our roof at the desired spacing. So, kinda match that up and then tighten it down. And with this tool, what's nice about it is it's gonna start to click whenever we have it torqued down to the right setting. So, you don't really have to worry about that. And we'll do the same exact thing for the other side. Now for the foot pad, we wanna make sure that this arrow is gonna be facing out. So place it like this, the little channel's here, and you just got to use a little bit of muscle to pop it into place. Once it's good, we'll do the same exact thing on the other side. Now go ahead and open up your doors, and we can set this down and get it positioned nice and center on our roof. We have a little notch right there. We're gonna fit it into that little gutter, and make sure it's nice and straight. Be a nice time to take a measuring tape out and measure from center to center, to make sure it's good on both sides. Open up this little flap. We're gonna take our fit kit, it's gonna slide right in there. So, this little thing has a hook on it, it's gonna connect onto it, and then we're gonna put it in to jam and tighten it up. I like to kinda tighten it up a little bit on one side, go to the other side, tighten that up, and kinda go back and forth, just to make sure it's nice and tight. So once you do that, you just wanna hear a little click, and then we know it's torqued down. Then you can close this flap. And then after that, we're pretty much ready to put on the cap. With the caps, they just have these two little hooks on the bottom, they're gonna go right here. So, you just put down first and then click it into place. We don't have locking cores on here now, but if you do wanna get some, you can just grab some whenever you grab the kit, 'cause they don't come with it. And that's basically it. We're ready to throw up whatever accessories you guys wanna put up on top of your Mazda's roof. And that was a look at our Yakima Roof Rack System with the Core Bars, on our 2021 Mazda CX-5..

From start to finish, the folks at etrailer -- and I spoke to several people there, so it was a consistent corporate vibe -- were fantastic to deal with.
There were delays in getting my product that were on the supplier side and out of etrailer's control, yet etrailer folks kept me up to date and also worked on a customized solution.
My goal was to be able to carry my surfboard on the roof of our 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe to the beach more than 3 hours away. But the particular model we had had no existing racks, no recessed areas, nothing to fix racks to. Not even the dealer had a solution. I was sh*t out of luck.
But etrailer hooked me up. The racks did take me a while to put on, but most of that time was fine tuning to reduce “hum” while driving. I’m very happy with them.
Thanks to etrailer, I have gone surfing and can go surfing whenever I'd like to.
Fit our Subaru Forester perfectly. Install was a breeze. For the money I wish they came with the core locks.
These crossbars were easy to install and adjust. Be sure to get all the pieces you need. There is no mention of the Landing Pads necessary to use these.
Very nice quality towers. Very heavy duty! They have a cool "snap" on / off mechanism for quick removal and installation.
I've just recently installed this setup on my 2015 Toyota Camry.
etrailer - Shopping for this rack was fairly simple, and the shipping from etrailer was quick and reliable. I received the rack in 2 different shipments but they both arrived at the same time. etrailer made sure the all the contents were available. They also have several resourceful videos on their YouTube page, which was helpful while shopping for the rack and during a few trouble shooting items while I was installing.
Yakima Core Bar - Overall a quality product. Everything necessary was supplied, including a handy measuring tape and some very well written instructions. The fit is clean and very sturdy. The only qualm I have is that the hex hole in the large anchor bolts are a bit larger than the supplied hex driver. Toward the end of the installation, the tool was worn and ended up turning inside the bolt itself (not due to over torquing whatsoever). I ended up having to use a hex set I had in my toolbox to complete the installation because the provided tool was starting to strip out the anchor bolt. With that said, the kit is still a great kit that meets my expectations.
Wind noise is quieter than my OEM VW bars on my 2017 Volkswagen GTI. It's noticeable, but nothing extreme - I believe that's just the price you pay when adding crossbars to a vehicle.
Verdict - etrailer has definitely met my expectations, and the Yakima kit provided is a well designed kit that fits well!
At first, a little tricky to install, as the kit comes with hardware for a variety of applications (different length/size bolts, etc). But after a quick look at the directions and identifying which bolt to use for my car, install was a breeze. I love this Yakima setup because I can remove the bars/towers and leave the landing pads with a cap. Makes it great for taking the canoe out on weekend trips, but not taking the fuel-economy hit during the weekday commute to work.

Yakima SkyLine Towers are well-designed and well-executed. They easily fit into the Yakima Landing Pads and form a tight fit when closed. And they also fit nicely into the Yakima JetStream Crossbars when following the Yakima instruction manual and various YouTube videos. I did run into a snag at first where I found the rubber seal on one SkyLine Tower getting caught on the JetStream Crossbar track, but after that I was careful not to let that happen with the other towers.
I find the appearance of the Yakima SkyLine Towers to match their level of quality in materials and design.
These crossbars feel like they are well made and sturdy. It took less than 30 minutes to install with the Ridgeline Towers. I love the look of the bars! Can't wait to load the Kayaks up and get out on the water.
Roof rack fits and works as advertised. Over the phone customer support for sales and install directions were very helpful and thorough. Timely delivery of my order, as usual! Easy to install on my 2015 4Runner. After I had the mounts ready and put on both bars, I installed the front one and fine-tuned it, the second took even less time then. I now have the ability to carry up to 3 kayaks, perfect! etrailer is a great company!

My experience with etrailer has been excellent. There was going to be a potential delay in one of the products, but their customer service promptly informed me, half the price of some of their competitors so can't really complain. Very sturdy, well made. The assembly instructions are not too good but if you call Yakima they will provide additional instructions.
Customer service was excellent, they called me to tell me one item was backordered and how long it would be. Package was shipped with enough packing material. Install was pretty easy, some of the Yakima measurements in the manual are a couple inches off but no big deal. This will be used to carry a box for when the family takes trips. Can pile all the luggage up top and have more room in the car. I would recommend the Yakima corebar roof rack and etrailer! Their price was lower than 2 other sites I checked.
We purchased the Yakima Skyline Towers roof rack with the Jet Stream crossbars. Took about 2 hours to install on the naked roof of our Flex. I drilled through the roof strip for the mounting bolts and they fit tighter than the factory rails. Very happy with our choice.
Very good product. The Yakama towers and cross bars feel very solid and appears to be high quality. Very easy install. Others have complained about the instructions, but guess I'm a visual person because the pictures all seemed very clear to me and the install was very easy. They do sit higher than I expected. After adding a Rhino Rack cargo basket, we only have about 4-5" clearance below the garage door.
Very happy with the Yakima roof top rack kit for my 2017 Ford Edge with glass roof. The instructions were a little confusing at first, but after reading through them a couple of times while working with the product they became much clearer. The Yakima fit site was helpful as well. After the initial cross bar mounting measurements and set up, attaching and detaching the racks from the roof is a very simple process.

I bought this for my Son as a Grad/BDay gift for a Honda HR-V which has slightly odd roof/door shape
He installed it himself said the install was straightforward but the instructions could use a little improvement.
etrailer Sales Support was great, I was a little concerned about getting the right parts and the return policy. Olivia was great to work with, she offered recommendations and matched the parts to the type and vehicle it was to be installed on along with a kayak mount.

I am thrilled this got delivered sooner than anticipated! It was quite easy to install once you started actually putting it together and measuring everything out. I like that this can easily be removed and installed onto the vehicle.
