Video Transcript for Erickson Ratchet Straps - Standard Strap - EM58541 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number EM58541. This is the Erickson ratchet tie-down strap. It's going to use web clamp technology as well as a double J hook design. The web clamp is going to be this spring-loaded handle right here. This is going to secure or hold excess strap neatly in place on the ratchet handle. It's going to help prevent the unused strap from tangling or flapping in the wind.

I'll show you how that's used towards the end of the video. This is a heavy duty tie-down strap that's going to let you secure large cargo on your truck bed or trailer. Again, it's heavy duty so it's going to be ideal for larger equipment. Here on our ratcheting mechanism it's a large oversized mechanism, so it makes it really easy to tighten down the strap, and it's going to maintain tension on the strap. It's going to use the nice, long and wide handle. It's going to offer a nice, secure grip. It's got some indentions in the grip so you can get a nice secure hold whenever you're using it.

The length is going to allow us to gain some really good leverage when tightening down the strap. It's got the oversized release lever right there; nice large opening so we can get our fingers in there; here's that. The ratchet mechanism's going to have 3 different stages. With it fully closed, the handle's not going to be able to come up. To transition it to the next stage, all we have to do is lift up on the release lever. It's going to allow it to go through a ratcheting position. Then you can lift up on the release lever, open it all the way up.

That's going to allow us to loosen up the strap. Once we're done or we get to where we're going, we can take the strap off of whatever load that we had secured. Here on the ratchet it's going to feature a heat-treated carbon steel construction. It is plated with a yellow dichromate finish for corrosion resistance. It's going to be the same here on the J hooks. Those are plated as well with the same finish for corrosion resistance, and their steel construction.

These are going to loop around your anchor points. The material here, this is going to be a heavy duty polyester material, heavy duty stitching; yellow in color so it's really highly visible. On one side of the strap, they're going to have their information printed on it. Erickson is, they're going to have their website, they're going to have the safe working load limit, which is 33,00 pounds. The strap offers a maximum load or break strength of 10,000 pounds. On the other side of the strap, it's just going to be plain yellow. That's a nice little feature to have as well. The strap dimensions: it's going to give us a width of 2 inches with an overall length of 40 feet. Again, safe working load limit 33,00 pounds. Tie-down straps . this is something you need to keep in mind . they must always be chosen according to their safe working load limit. The weight of the secured cargo must not exceed the combined working load limit of the straps being used. One of the last things I want to show you is how to install the strap into the ratcheting mechanism, and then how to secure the excess strap using the web clamp design right here. That's going to be a spring-loaded clamp. Here on the plastic piece it's got teeth that's going to rest on top of the strap, just making sure that the strap does not disengage from the hold position. We're going to find the end of our strap. I'm going to pull out plenty of length here so we can get it ran 00:03:25 through the mechanism. I find it easiest to go ahead and open up the ratchet mechanism all the way. Now what we're going to do is here on the outside of the mechanism, we're going to take our strap, run it through that slot in that center bar. Then I'm just going to bring it right over the top of that bar back through the ratchet mechanism. With that installed, you can go ahead and make sure that your double J hooks are secured on the anchor points. Run this over your load, and then you can pull through any excess strap that you may have, just like that. Now you're ready to close the mechanism and you're ready to start ratcheting the load or ratcheting the strap over the top of your load. It's got a nice smooth operation. Once you have your strap tight, what you'll do is you'll make sure that your handle is in the fully down position. Take any excess that you had, simply just wind it up, lift up on that web clamp, run the excess strap underneath it. That's going to sit right over the top of the ratchet; just like so. Then you release that web clamp and it's going to hold the strap in place right on top of the ratcheting mechanism. That's going to do it for our review of part number EM58541. This is the Erickson ratchet tie-down strap with the web clamps and double J hooks. .

I only buy these ratchet straps. They hold up well and the clamp to hold the excess strap makes strapping down a load easy and fast.
