These dual-purpose steps are the ideal accessory for any Jeep enthusiast. Keep the bars folded up alongside your vehicle when off-roading to help with ground clearance and to get extra protection for your rocker panels. The heavy-duty gas struts ensure that the bars remain folded up, even in harsh driving conditions. When you finish your trek, just step down on the bar as you exit and it will lock into the step position. Everyday driving can be done with the bars in either position, so you don't need to fold the steps back up until you decide to head off road again.

Pulling the lever on Rampage RockGuard tube steps

To release the bars from the step position and fold them up, push down on each bar until you can easily access the integrated lever. Downward force on the bar is required to release the latch mechanism. Once you have hold of the lever, simply pull it and the bar will release. The gas struts will then lift the bar into the rock guard position and hold it in place.

Video Transcript for Rampage RockGuard Retractable Nerf Bars Installation - 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Shane: Hi, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to show you how to install, the Rampage RockGuard Nerf Bars, on our 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Each side is going to have a release lever, and two gas struts, one on each end, that allow you to easily fold your bar up against your rocker panel, which you're going to add that protectio when you're off-roading. Then, when you're ready to use them as a nerf bar, you simply fold them down, and that allows you to easily get in and out of your vehicle. They're going to be constructed of 2" steel bars, with a black powder coat finish. It's going to resist any rust or corrosion, and it's going to add a nice, rugged look to your Jeep. Unlike some of the other ones out there, these are also going to add protection, because they're going to fold up against your rocker panels. As far as the installation goes, it's pretty straightforward.

It's going to come with all the necessary hardware. It's not going to require any welding or drilling. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get these installed. We need to start be removing our old ones. Now, if you have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler X, most likely it's going to to have these running boards on it. The easy way to do it is, you're going to have several bolts on the bottom that are holding this to the brackets.

Don't take those off. You're going to have two nuts on the back, and one bolt that goes up like this on each bracket, and it will pull the bracket off with the board.10mm wrench or socket for these. Some of the places might be a little bit harder, like up here, to get a socket up there. Then we'll take a 13mm socket, and we're going to have one of these on each one of our brackets. This bolt goes up, and you can see how the frame's kind of open right there, the body's open there What I'd suggest doing is maybe spray some penetrating oil up there, let it sit for a couple hours and break up any dirt and debris or rust that may be on that bolt.

What we don't want to do is, we don't want to break it off in the hole, because then we've got to drill it out later on if for some reason, we need to put these back on. So just to help yourself out, spray them down. And then, we're going to have three of these. Again, we'll have one of these on each one of the brackets on each one of our running boards. That's going to be on each side.Once you get your bolts off, we're just going to lift and slide it out, just like that.

And then, you're going to do that same thing on the other side of the vehicle. For our front two mounting locations, you're going to have a clip that looks like this, in there. We need to remove that, because our new bars are going to have new clips to re-install in the same place. Take our new clip, and want that facing up inside of the body, and we're going to push it right over top of our hole, just like that. Do the same thing up here, and you're going to have that same thing on the other side of the vehicle. Now, we're going to take our bars, and you can see how our brackets line up with the holes in the side. Hex bolt, flat washer, and we're going to thread one into each of the holes where we put the new clips. And we're just going to leave them loose for now. And then for the one back here in the back, this one is just going to thread into an existing weld nut. Then we're going to take our small hex bolts, flat washer, we're going to through the hole, fit it through the hole in the bracket, this one first. Next side, we'll put another flat washer, and then we're going to put a small nylon locknut. One thing I do want to mention: if you have a hard time getting your bracket holes to line up on both holes, loosen up this large nut and bolt that's right here. Just loosen it up a little bit, just enough where that bracket will move, where you'll be able to get them in. Once you get those in, we're going to take a 10mm socket and wrench, and we're going to tighten the two bolts on the outside of each bracket. And we'll come back with a 13mm socket, and we'll tighten our three bolts running along the bottom. Once you get one side done, repeat the process on the other side. Keep in mind, if you loosen that center bolt, just make sure you tighten it back up. You just don't want to do it too tight. You want to be able to move this or fold this up when you're rock climbing, fold it back down when you want to get in and out of the vehicle. That's going to complete our look at installation on the Rampage Rockguard Nerf Bars on our 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

Overall very satisfied with rails/steps and service from etrailer.
Like many reviews, the first set arrived damage. Fortunately, Rachel and team came through and replaced within the week. Etrailer overpacked and replacement arrived undamaged even though the inner box shows they got knocked around some.
Installation is easy and recommend down loading instructions as what comes with the units are incomplete and picture detail is washed out from rererecopying.
I found it helpful to assure the mounting brackets were square and true to rails as it made fit up / screw installation easy. Rails/steps pivot as advertised. If you are seeking that flexibility, these are an affordable solution.
Etrailer’s Customer service was excellent. Appreciate their approach and responsiveness.
Rampage could fix with shipping damage with and five cents of 1 inch styrofoam stuck in the ends of the box. ...just say’n....

Overall, this item has still been phenomenonal. This spring after a harsh PA winter and road salt, they were a bit "sticky", but nothing a little WD 40 couldn't fix. I get tons of compliments on the look and I love the function for my short passengers as well as off-road. I recently NEEDED the protection they provide, or I would have done major damage to my Jeep!

Overall, I'm very pleased and would buy these again and would recommend them to anyone!
